Re: M!D barels

Criterion, available through Numrich. Criterion's site says their Garand barrels are ready for installation with timed threads and all cutouts, but are chambered .010" short, and must be finish chambered/headspaced by a professional gunsmith.

Re: M!D barels

hi greg , how are these barrels , have you or anyone else on the forum tried one ???

Re: M!D barels

The Criterion Garand barrels are A++

That being said I see USGI NOS in wrap M1D barrels up for sale on the CMP forum frequintly for not all that much.
I would say they have that much premium to them

Re: M!D barels

There were three NIW M1D barrels listed for member sale on the CMP forum within the last week or so. All the same seller. I have never seen NIW D barrels on the forum before. These had the scope block mounted and the correct numbers - $800/barrel and they sold quick.

The CMP sold 4,000 NIW M1 barrels a year ago for $125/barrel. Some guys got D numbered barrels but they lacked the scope block. They also lacked the handguard clip cuts so they were not so useful as regular M1 barrels. Those guys were in a quandry - they had a D barrel by the numbers but without the block there was not a big premium and for regular use they could not secure the handguard wood on an iron sight rifle.

Thes GI barrels can be bought off the forum almost every week. They go for more than the original $125 now. CMP also sells Criterion barrels. I think they have them for somewhere between $125 and $175. They just started to sell .308 Garands - probably preparing for the end of the surplus 30-06 ammo. They may have .308 barrels available if that interests you.

If you are dead set on making a D the problem you will have is with the scope block. Originals can be pricey and the repros are not always so easy to work with.

If you live near one of the CMP stores you may want to cherrypick a rack or field grade M1D, Perhaps find one with a great barrel, crappy wood and you can probably salvage some good parts. You will get a GI block aalready installed ready to go. If you buy one of the CMP service grade M1D's you will only need to find your M84 an you will be ready to go. I think these are selling in the $1200-$1500 range.

These are the NOS barrels I was speaking of

Re: M!D barels

A WTB ad on the CMP bForum may get you one. I'd expect to see a price of about $4-500 (probably more). You will have to supply/mount the scope block.

If you are looking for a "repro" D just use a stock barrel. There is nothing special about the D barrel it shoots to same MOA as the regular M1, only benefit of the D being the scope mount. There are NIW standard barrels on the forum now.

Re: M!D barels

Just an added 2 pennies here.Years ago I took an M1 barrel and had it turned down to accept one of those Numrich $12.00 scope blocks. The machine shop did a wonderfull job turning the barrel. No flaws there. BUT when the block was installed and pinned,I attempted to sight the rifle in at a 500 yard target. Had to adjust the scope all the way up and the best it would do was hit dirt about 75 yards out. Those repro barrel blocks are not machined "true",,and yes,I did check it against my several original D barrels I had at the time. YMMV
