Looking for a 300 win mag, $3K is the most I can spend on the rifle . Do I build or buy something like a TRG42 off the shelf, or look for something used. What do ya think?

Buy this set up. Spend the leftover money on range time and ammo. Shoot the rifle often and a lot. Practice carefully and get good with your weapon system.

When you finally manage to shoot out the barrel, send the rifle into your favorite Sniper's Hide sponsering gunsmith to have it completely accurized and rebuilt. GAP, SAC, APA, HSSS, KMW, etc.

Then upgrade your scope as necessary and you'll have yourself a rock solid long range shooter that you can use to it's potential.

Just my opinion.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

I'm going the build route. I got a stilled on the group buy. I've ordered a criterion REM-age barrel so I can install it myself. I am putting it in a McRee chassis. All rolled, it should come in just over $2k. Even buying a stilled full price you could easily stay under the $3k mark...until you add the glass!

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

I was able to get a GAP 300WM off the PX here for something like $2000, I found that to be one helluva deal as it came with dies, brass, bullets, and some other nice items. Its close to 1500 rounds now and still shoots lights out.

I also have a Kimber Advanced Tactical 300WM, to get it in shooting shape it cost me like $3000

And then I have a McMillan TAC-300, I don't even want to disclose what I paid for that as a kit from McM.... Its nice but a hard lesson learned as was the Kimber....

Look around on the guns for sale thread and have patience. I am in Kabul with much of nothing to do except scan the listings for great deals. The thing about rifles in this price range is that people generally have a respect for them and they are treated and taken care of very well so I wouldn't hesitate on most used weapons listed here.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

Poke, thanks, be safe, I'd love to find a GAP for sale, I'll start looking

This, but a used 700 Police would probably shave some cash off the price if you can find one in .300win, maybe enough for a complete reloading setup. Also, a used Savage would allow you to be your own smith, because can change everything on it with hand tools. There are several barrel makers that chamber for a Savage.

Here's a Savage from another Hide member. It shoots 3/8in groups and he's paid a hell of a lot less than anything so far suggested in this thread:

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

Save the money and get a Savage with decent glass! Most shoot great out of the box and if it doesnt just put a Kreiger or Broughton barrel on it!

My Savage 10fcp-k 308 is a consistant 5 shot 1/4 group gun, on some days I can pull off better then that. and that is with the factory barrel on it!

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

I've got a Savage 110LA in .300wm for sale right now in the FSS.
It's not a GAP but it shoots .5 moa at 200 with my handloads and I've already done load development for it that the buyer can have.

Here's the link if your interested: .300wm Savage

I also have a few different leupolds laying around that I could offer instead of the SWFA if you'd rather have one of thoes.
I also have rounds loaded up for this rifle that I would give the buyer if they wanted them.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

I just picked up one out of another forums FS section for about 1k. I figure a little work and even with optics, I'll be in it less than 3k.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

TRG would be awesome, and I think ya can get a DTA in 300 Mag. for around 2700.00 Both of them are more accurate then most people including myself can shoot.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

This is my first time to post on here and hello to everyone. I would like to give some info to maybe help you out. For 3K you can build one hell of a custom. I don't know if I can post links to different websites to purchase your parts but you can get a Stiller action, Brux barrel,Jewell trigger,Your choice of stock for way less then 3k and have someone built it with everything you will need. Don't cut yourself short for that much money you can have a nice one built.

This is the route I went but went ahead and upgraded the scope up front with a Vortex 5-20x50 Razor HD so I went over. I will hoperfully be posting pics of it this week with build details.

The 5R out of the box was a very nice rifle.

Re: Best 300 win mag for $3K or less

With that budget personally I would buy a TRG-42 from Euro-optics, but that is because I only have one decent shooting rifle at the moment. If I had a few I would probably get one custom built from a smith as I would have plenty of toys to play with while I waited ;D
