JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Well After over 2 years of waiting I received my JAE700 Stock last Friday.

I opted for OD with Swat Black Accessories:

The Rifle that I have had for about 1.5 years is:
Duracoated 28" Krieger Heavy Varmint Chambered in .260AI
Stiller Tac-30 Action
Rifle-Basix Trigger @8oz
Sightron 8-32x56 Scope
Atlas Bipod and Accu-shot monopod

The Stock fit and finish is flawless it really is. It is firm, solid, and very well made.

I was expecting a 'plasticy feel' to the non-aluminum parts (the OD Green parts). It isn't at all. They are made of a very hard polymer and feel just like my McMillan A5 or HS Precision stock texture wise and hardness.

Lets start from the back and move forward through the stock:
The Buttpad: I wasn't sure on the buttpad design from photos but it is very very nice. It is soft and grippy. I can't comment yet on durability but I don't think I will have any issues.

JAE700RSA003.jpg

JAE700RSA010.jpg

The Cheekrest: The cheekrest is awesome. It is lowered and raised by rotating the dial below the rest. It has a locking knob under the buttstock where tightening and loosening it will make the dial turn more easily or locking it solid once you have it set up. It raises the rest in very very small increments, which allows for a very precise fit to the shooter.

You can still easily remove the bolt no matter the height of the rest. You cannot though use a cleaning rod with the cheekrest up so you have to remove it. I did not opt for the quick release lever. But really, you don't need it unless you really want to. At the top of the cheekrest are two allen key screws that can be removed in less than 30seconds. It does not affect the height of the rest so you don't have to give up your settings. The quick release is $119.00 if ordered with Stock OR $249.00 if sold seperately. Is that worth 30 seconds of your time? If yes, have at it.

Lastly, the cheekrest is symmetrical and the dial can be operated on both sides for you lefties that want to shoot it are not encumbered.

The Grip: I think this is my favorite part of the whole stock. It is by far the most comfortable and ergonomic setup I have used so far. It outdoes my McMillan A5, All of the HSP stocks I have had as well as a bunch of other various ones I have tried. I opted for the additional rest. The rest comes with a bunch of spacers that you can add depending on your hand size. The material is a rubbery grippy textured substance. It feels great in the hand and would be awesome in hot or cold climates. Good in cold as it won't feel cold on bare hands and good in hot as it will stay very grippy with sweaty hands. It fits my hand perfectly and for people like myself that shoot thumb up it was designed with us in mind: look at the thumb spots up astern of the action:

I'll cover below the action first:
Trigger guard and Magazine well: The stock uses AI magazines. They fit great and the mag release is large enough to be easy to operate but not so large that you are accidentally hitting it:

JAE700RSA013.jpg

The Mag well: Is generous in size so there is no resistance inserting the mag and you don't have to bang around finding the hole if not not in the prime position. Mine is with a 10rd mag.

IMG_9072.jpg

The stock also has screws where you can adjust the longitudinal, lock-up, and vertical settings to suit your taste. I haven't played with those and didn't feel the need to.

The bottom rail: The slot is very long and depending on what size of rail you pick will have room to maneuver. I opted for the full 9" rail as I like to be able to move my bipod forward and back depending on where I am shooting.

Now up top:
The barrel channel: Is very very roomy. It will adequately fit a full non-tapered full bore barrel.

IMG_9067.jpg

The action fitting:

IMG_9065.jpg

IMG_9070.jpg

The action easily fits into the stock. The area is generous though and moves around quite a bit before tightening down. Some might argue it should be bedded. Problem is though if you want to go down that road is that the action screws are inside the stock and with all the other screws it would take a very good and very patient (read expensive) gunsmith to do the job. I was told by JAE that you can get at the action screws though by removing certain parts.

IMG_9064.jpg

What you do is set the Barreled action down into the stock and slide it back so the recoil lug is resting flush against the collet in the hole then tighten down the screws. I found this hard to do while at the same time trying to ensure the action was level with the stock at the same time. The screw holes have some leeway which allows for different actions or size recoil lugs to still be in line with the screws

IMG_9069.jpg

Once tightened down the action does fit pretty well

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Wow that looks awesome. Is a2 year wait typical of a fully custom JAE?

My completed setup weighs in a 20.6Lb, not your best run and gun shooter. Keep in mind though that a lot of that is due to my barrel choice. I don't have the stock's weight but with the 9" rail it is just a bit heavier than my previous McMillan A5:

Shootin032.jpg

I then took it shooting on the weekend.

It is very very comfortable to shoot, The recoil pad was very comfortable, the base length of pull was a perfect fit for me. I am 5'11".

It shot great, no real difference in accuracy from my bedded A5 but shooting was far more comfortable, which aids me in more qualitative ways.

I took it out to 900yds and albeit windy it shot pretty well:

Overall it was worth the 2 year wait. I'm happy and that is all that really matters.

Any questions I'll do my best to answer.

Regards,
Clayton

Sorry it had to be 3 posts long otherwise the photos wouldn't all load for some reason

Not any more.

The initial wait was for all the fixtures to be made and all that for full production. now that they are actually in full production mode the wait should be significantly less.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Nice rifle, very good review. Have you checked the POI shift when removing and reinstalling into the JAE?

They are supposed to have them out too. They are the same exact chassis, just a different collet and mag well, will bolt into the above stock and make it a LA.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Well I can't really give a proper review on that because for one thing I didn't use the same load after changing and second, I took the opportunity of switching the stock to adjust my scope as well.

That wasn't due to the stock switch just did it since I had it apart anyway.

I don't expect it to have though, and if it did only a tiny bit.

That is the one complaint I have though about the stock. There is a lot of movement in the action before the screws are tightened down.

It doesn't behave like a properly bedded stock as the design has lots of flat angles rather than a fitted shape of the Rem 700 footprint. If I were to make a 2nd generation I would have made it fit the contours of the action better.

The holes for the action have play. That isn't due to low quality, it is to allow some room for people with other actions like my Stiller, or a Surgeon, etc that can still line up. Or for people with different thickness recoil lugs causing the screws to line up further forward or back.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

i was told there is a 10 month wait as of feb this year.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

It's as beautiful as I knew it would be. Very nice, makes me want a bolt gun again...

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

I have to admit that's actually sexier than an AI. Too bad they don't offer it with a folding stock...

It is still 10-12 months as of yesterday.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Wow the Vaporware is no longer Vapor....

Looks cool and to be the same ergonomics as the Jae for the M1 series.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

I must say that typically I don't allow appearance to overwhelm my sense of "what works" but this really is a great looking stock. And your review certainly speaks very highly of the functionality. The thumb rest thing is an aspect I find very important. McMs work well for me, AICS don't for that reason alone.

What's the weight of the 260 and how much does the stock contribute to that weight?

Thanks for sharing.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

I thought these were a myth. I ordered one in 2008 and was told about a 4 month wait. I talked and talked to the mysterious Lisa only to be pushed and pushed. In 2010 I canceled my order to only be stiffed about $250. I thought i had been duped. But now that I see a real one I'm still impressed. Unless you are just Lisa or one of the JAE guys trying to get more people

Good looking gun brother.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

The whole thing currently weighs 20.6Lb as I mentioned above. I'll look into taking it back apart this weekend and weighing the stock on its own.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Thank you for the pics and review ceriksson. I have one on order with an ETA of September. After owning a JAE-100 for a few years I was willing to take the chance and wait on the 700.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

nice looking stock, glad the 2 year wait paid off, i`m waiting on a terry cross sentinel stock, and was quoted 4 months, i envy your patience

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

That's quite the nice looking setup. I've always liked the JAE stock on the M1As, but man that 2 year wait is rough.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

They missed a big opportunity, had this stock not been vaporware for years they'd have a good market share now. There is an awful lot of competition now. It looks comfortable, I'd like to try one.

Be great if you could do this. It's a nice looking stock that sounds very functional. Looks like an option I might want to explore.

Just curious, are you connected to this company or just a satisfied customer? Sounds like there were some issues with the development and delivery of the product but the end result looks promising.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Sorry I wasn't able to weigh the straight stock this weekend I'll try as soon as I can.

I'm active duty Navy and I am heading out very soon for a month for an EX then only back in for a week before heading out again for another few weeks. I don't know how many chances I'll get to weigh it.

Because I'm gone so often I store most of my firearms with a family member.

I have zero, zilch, nada, no connection to JAE whatsoever, just another customer.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Years ago i called to order one and was told it was 6-8 months, after 8 months it was going to be a year or more. After the 4th or 5th lie i just canceled, Now 6 years later i see they are out in a small number. I would like one but after so many lies by the company i will try to buy a used one some day just like my Ml-a. MM

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

I have one as well...waited over four years.

I don't think they were lying about delivery times; there were just a lot of constant changes that delayed everything. (And no, I'm not affiliated with the company in anyway).

Changes since original prototype:

AI Mags versus original proprietary mag
Lighter chassis
"Collet & Cage" design to allow long and short actions to use the same chassis.
Redesign and implementation of QD cheek rest

All of this happened based on consumer comments and competed with their M1A stock production. (Which with the war going on, particularly in the 'stan, it's no surprised they were swamped and other efforts were delayed). In talking with Lisa, it seems they have now expanded production (additional machines and shop space) and delivery times should be getting shorter.

I was frustrated many times as well with the delays; but it is, what it is, eh? You pays your money, you takes your chances...

I have an older Rem 700 VS circa '95-'96, and it barely fits. It was a chore getting everything in place, but once there, it is snug.

Very happy with the stock and think it is in a class of its own. I also have an XLR. Apples and oranges, with both having a niche to fill IMHO....

Could you clarify on what you mean?

Thanks.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Simon,

IMHO, the XLR is an entry level chassis stock that is well worth the cost, giving options, fit and finish at a very good price point with a relatively short turn around time.

The JAE 700 is a more complex design with some details and fit & finish that are in line with it's price tag (extremely well done).

Both stocks are functional, but the designs (and target market) are radically different. Hence; apples vs. oranges (IMHO).

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Looks nice, I ordered the same stock in march, and I was told I would get it in January. Hopefully it comes because I'm seriously thinking about selling it and getting a Barrett .416 the longer I wait.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Nice!!
If you like you can send it to me and I'll give you a thorough evaluation...however I'm really busy at the moment and it may take a couple of years ;-)

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Has anyone received one of these in the last 2-3 months? If so, when did you place the order?

If these are in fact in "production" now and shipping, why in the hell is the wait time so long?

If anyone doesn't want theirs, let me know......I'm looking for one.

Re: JAE 700RSA Stock Review *56k death*

Hi Trevor, I placed my order at the end of December (right after I bought your barreled action, which I am thrilled with). I spoke with Lisa (one of the owners) when I ordered and she said it would be about 8-10 months if I remember correctly. I asked as well "why so long" and she mentioned that they are a small machine shop and did not expect the growth they have experienced. She said they are in the process of building a much larger machine shop with more equipment to handle the workload and once that is done will be able to handle the bulk of their orders in a more timely fashion.

In the meantime, I bought an AICS 2.0 stock from Mile High Shooting (great guys) and I go to pick that up this week
