Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

Just received 3 boxes of Hornady 6.5CM brass from Powder Valley. To my surprise, none of the brass shows the annealing like Lapua brass. My brass is lot#4110772

I thought with the new creed brass, Hornady was skipping the post annealing wash process??

Or did Powder Valley receive some old brass from Hornady?

Anybody have a lot# off their brass that shows the annealing?

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

My 2011 lot is polished as well.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I have bought 3 boxes lately and 2 were the non polished stuff and 1 was the polished. I think they went back to polished, the 2 non were lot 4100539 and the one that was is 4110646.

On a side note, call third generation shooting supply in el Reno, ok (vendor here also) if you are looking for the non polished, that is where I bought the 2 boxes from. They have good prices also.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I was hoping you would reply Rob01. Thanks for the info, I was curious why the change. My guess is, there was complaints from those that don't know any better..."dirty brass or just ugly.

I'm not worried as I don't feel the post anneal wash really affects anything. Even though the "Lapua" look is awfully sexy in my book.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

The Hornady brass is just fine. No need for Lapua brass.

I bought 3 boxes from this same lot (4110772)about a month ago from Powder Valley. All show annealing, just like the Lapua look. This is weird that they would polish and not polish brass from the same lot.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I'm sad after I have to clean my 6.5CM brass and the annealing coloring washes away. I'm weird.

Really??? You don't think Lapua making brass for the Creedmoor would be a good thing for everyone that isn't connected to Hornady? In my experience their brass is pretty lackluster in quality.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

Sure another brass option would be fine for loaders but it won't make the cartridge any better or worse. You can get excellent accuracy with the Hornady brass as well as the factory loaded ammo, which wouldn't be as affordable with Lapua brass.

I use Hornady brass in my .308, and .243 as well and yes I have used Lapua brass back when it was $33/100 in my .308 but there's no way in hell I would pay what they charge now. The cost to benefit is definitely not there. Even if I didn't shoot for Hornady I would use their brass over Lapua and not feel slighted in the least. I know some people think you can't get accurate ammo unless the headstamp says Lapua but sorry it's just not true.

Oh and not to mention, as it's touted on the Hide constantly, wouldn't you want to support an American made company who employs Americans before a foreign one?

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I agree with Rob in regards to 6.5CM brass. It is extremely well made and packaged. If Lapua starts making 6.5CM brass I doubt I will switch. I would at least test it though to test for longevity versus the Hornady brass.

I have a .204R and spend a lot of time on that specific caliber's forum and the Hornady brass is loathed over there. I have not tried it but enough people do not like it that I will just trust them. With the .204R the Hornady brass is very inconsistent and it shows on target. That is NOT the case with 6.5CM.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I just got a box of brass today that shows annealing. Fwiw

Why I am not a fan of Hornady brass is after shooting their 6.5 CM and 338 brass and having completely loose primer pockets after about 3 - 4 firings on loads that were not hot. I don't mind spending 3 times the price for brass if it's much higher quality and I can load it many more times. Maybe they have improved their quality in the last couple years, I haven't bought any in a while.

They have. It's good. There was a bad batch in the beginning. I don't know about the .338 stuff though.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I have 7 firings on some brass that I have tested loads on and it's run from 2800-2870fps with the 140s and the primer pockets are still tight. That brass is a few years old.

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

Lapua have firmly stated they will not be making 6.5CM brass.

Not disbelieving you, but to whom, and when, did they say that?

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

i use both lapua and and hornady match cases in my 308 i shoot 155 amax @ 2950fps and both are holding up and are good quality my lapua i'm on my 17th loading but i dont over strees the cases i neck size and only bump/full length resize when it gets alittle hard to chamber.i also anneal every 5th firing.
as for hornady not sure how many times i loaded it some is my first set of brass i bought 3 years ago .

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

I wore a Creedmoor barrel out with 300 pieces of Hornady Brass. I anneal every 3rd firing.

I think the brass is great and needs very little prep. I always uniform the primer pockets but with the Hornady Creedmoor brass I find that the tool never even does any cutting. The flash holes seem to not need any attention either. The only prep I did on my last 400 cases from new was to neck turn them. I measured a few necks after expanding them and found a little inconsistency.

BTW I still have and use some of the first 300 pieces of brass that wore out the first barrel. If it weren't for me bumping the shoulders too much and having some case head separations along the way, I'd bet I'd still have all of them with no casualties.

The primer pockets are always tight. They are even too tight when I switched from WLR primers to Fed 210M's...

Re: Hornady 6.5 CM annealed look

Just out of curiosity does anybody know the lot number of the bad brass? I have a box with lot# "4100105" and I found a couple with splits in them.
