Hi guys,

I know that Scott has a very good reputation around here, but I am having trouble getting my money back from him from a built that never happened. I can't get in touch with him, so not sure what to do.

In January of 2011 I ordered a 6.5 grendel upper from him, he was doing a Sniper's Hide group buy for these at the time. I sent him a deposit and started to wait. I was given a 6 week estimate, but with SHOT coming up I knew it would take longer. Every few month I would ping Scott and ask him about progress, he never contacted me first, but would eventually respond. First, he had trouble with barrels, then the hanguard I wanted, then he lost my contact info in a computer crash. At one point, after about a year he finally got all the parts and was on his way to the shop to build my upper. Again during all this time I had to ping him, to ask what is going on.

Finally, on Feb 16 of this year I was fed up and asked Scott to return my deposit. I waited for a response and even contacted Jason from Specialized Dynamics and asked him to ask Scott to contact me. Scott finally responded, told me that he had trouble with his barrel supplier, even though a few month earlier he told me he had all the parts for my build ready. At this point I didn't care and just wanted my money back, Scott said he would return it. It is almost end of April, and I still don't have my deposit back. I also can't get in touch with him.

What would you guys suggest I should do at this point?

Thanks,
Alex.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Bought a scope from Scott once, and it was a straight up deal. He's well known around here, I'm sure he will make it right. Give Scott or his shop another call.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Scott is a stand up guy. Hell, I built the website for him.

That being said, I think he is going through some growing pains right now. He started SD as a one man band kind of business and I think to a certain degree, he is becoming a victim of his own success.

As he works to establish better capacity for folks, I would suggest a little patience and reaching out to him again. To a certain degree, I dont blame you for being impatient, its hard to have money tied up in something - particularly where there is no expected "outcome" that you expect while that money is not in your hands.

At the same time, I have worked with scott for more than a year on odds and ends, I have one of his rifles myself, and while its unfortunate you have been part of the recent growing pains, I think its worth giving him the benefit of the doubt here and a little more time.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Hi Alex,

I think Scott will refund you...it may take a long time though. I went with him after seeing multiple recomendations from the hide.

Contact during the prolonged build process was frustrating at times, but I did get my mine. Love my upper. I believe Scott is a victim of his own success...

I would just keep calling him and Jason.

Good luck.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

I ordered a 22 inch bull barrel in 6.5 grendel last December, I received a 20 inch light weight barrel at the end of March and have been trying to get a hold of him ever since. I feel I made a big mistake going with this “Specialized Whatever”

Ya come on man, you gotta at least give him another two years to complete it.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

akaplan, your gripe is more than legit and in fact it is down right criminal. I don't know Scott but there seems to be lots of this in the gun world. Lots of promises with sometimes little results. You will get all kinds of apologetics to come on here saying what a great guy Scott is but in the end of the day you just want what was promised to you or your money back. There are lots of AR builders out there to go to so competition is fierce for money so it only takes a builder a couple of these and they will lose business.

I hope he takes it as a valid criticism and corrects at least this situation. But, one thing I have found is for every person that comes out to talk about their experiences there are many others with the same issue who do not.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

It's known Scott builds a good product.. well known. Most times the business end of things is much harder than the actual builds.

I contacted Scott about a 6.5 LBC build. PM'd on the board hear and actually talked to him on the phone. Unfortunately a family emergency put the build on hold before we finalized the details. Once I was ready to go again I made several attempts to contact Scott about actually doing the project build but never got a response. I went another direction in the end on my own.

Though I don't think Scott is being sneaky, as we don't know what's going on in his life. I would say he owes you your money back and the wait seems to be more than fair on your end. Just keep up the fight brother. Good luck.

Maybe check in over at Predator Forums and see if anyone has any leads... he's big over there too.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

As far as CS and professionalism go------- If he is still posting publicly via forums while a paying client is requesting info.....that is complete BS. As I have had this occur post "sale" with others, coupled with a contract failure.... Thus, I boycott those biz/persons and are not recommended..

If he has gone silent, well, there may be legit things as tough as it is to accept and deal with when money and time are lost.

Sad to hear about these issues. Mark Gordon at SAC might "relieve" the pain.....

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

i haven't been on very many forums as of late, a few times here and there, but to get to Alex's point. Your refund went out.

I won't go into a big elaborate story of circumstances, it went out and I wish you well. parts are harder and harder to come by, issues with vendors, etc.... is the reason for the wait, but again it went out and hearing promises are equally frustrating not only for the customer, but also for us as a builder.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Alex I hope that you recieved the refund that was Scott said he sent. I know your frustrations for I too have been trying to get in contact with anyone at camp SD not only on the special order I placed in January 2011 but another order I placed in November 2011.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Although I have never done any business with SD, I tried unsuccessfully to get in touch with him after he said he could help me out with an AR10 barrel. After several voice mails that apparently went unheard, I gave up trying and went another route. Being in business myself, when someone calls and wants to potentially provide income for my family, I do what I can to respond quickly. Even if I can't help the person, I contact them and tell them that.

I had the exact same experience with an AR15 barrel. Life happens, but supposedly he had my barrel in stock, but I could never get in touch with him when it came time to pick it up.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Someone suggested "a little patience"....FUCK that! Hahahaha, the SnipersHide build really screwed all of us, because apparently to some people here after a year without your build where you were quoted a 6 week wait, you're be entirely too impatient.

There's nothing wrong with waiting, especially in this game but you are more then owed an excuse or refund, period.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Thank you for the support. I finally received a check from Scott about a week ago. I was waiting for it to clear to post an update. I guess it is possible to get your money back, but it definitely takes a very long time and the experience leaves a lot to be desired.

Unfortunatelly this industry is know for such antics, but this shouldn't be an excuse.

Re: Scott from specialized dynamics

Its good to see that Scott pulled through for you Alex. I sure wish that he would communicate with me for I have tried emailing, calling, pm'ing and texting him and for some reason he must not be recieving any of these items from me because I have not recieved anything back from him. My frustration is building and my patience is not what it use to be. Hopefully he will soon contact me.
