7 SAUM or 30-06?

I've got that itch for a new custom, but I'm stuck trying to choose between these two calibers. The actually have some pretty similar ballistics so that makes it even harder for me to choose.

I'd like to use this for primarily long range target shooting, maybe a few F-Class shoots a year, and minimal hunting.

That said, the 7SAUM I could load some heavy bullets way out there, and still have it feed from a magazine. However, it could be a barrel burner during some F-Class shoots.

On the other hand, the 30-06 would be better on barrel life, but I likely couldn't get heavy bullets to feed from the magazine.


Which would you choose?

Not sure what ballistic program your using but the 06 has nothing on a 7saum
Barrel life the 06 will be way better, 2-3 x better
I,m not a fan of mags period thou i do like the SAUM, it will for sure go the distance.

The only way to get a .30-06 to do what what that 7mm up above will do is to use 190gr - 210ish gr pills and get em up to 2800-2900 fps. You need a 26-30 inch barrel and a LOT of RL22. You load it like a light magnum and it kicks accordingly.

I think the 7SAUM has better ballistics than 30-06. I would look at what you plan to do. 7suam is hard to find brass, and is pricy. The 30-06 brass is everywhere and can get Lapua easy. If you just plan to shoot alot, I would look at the 30-06, and load it up and shoot. Dont have to worry about barrel life. I load the 208 amax at 3.340" and they shoot great at 2700fps. No lie it does have some recoil, maybe looking at removable tactical Muscle brake.

You need figure out if barrel life or performance is more important to you. Nothing wrong with either, although really I don't know why you would choose the 7 saum over the 7 rem mag since you dont seem to be dead set on a short action if you are considering the 30-06.

7mm mag over the 30-06 if you handload because of superior ballistics with less recoil.

As stated a 180 Berger VLD G1 of .659 or the new 180 Hybrid G1 .674 doing 2950 fps is better than a 30-06. But as you know the price is barrel life.

If you go 7SAUM build on a long action for the longer pills. I have heard Berger is working on a 195gr 7mm pill. I am doing a build right now in 7SAUM as a long range hunting rig on a Surgeon 1086 action.

I'm comparing a 30-06 running 208 Amax at 2650 to a 7 SAUM running 162 Amax at 2900. With a 200 yard zero, there's only about 20" more drop to the 208 at 700 yards.

Either way, I'm looking at a long action. (Manners stock already ordered.)

I'm just curious if I can get a 208 Amax to feed from a long action when it's loaded a little long.

Then again, a .284 Win with a 28" barrel might work too .....

I did not mean to muddy the water, so to speak. I was looking for a mile-capabale gun last year and after doing countless hours
of research I kept coming back to the 284 whinny. It came down to this and the 7mm wsm. I found the ballastics to be sensational for the 180 Bergers and you could get them going fast enough (2750-2800 fps) to get to a mile at 900 ft altitude.
Remember, in order to get the efficiency out of this cartridge, you must chamber it in a long-action. Check it out.....

Defiance is building a custom 'medium' action specifically for the 7mm SAUM and WSM cartridges loaded out to 3.20" OAL.

I have one on order for my F-class Open gun.
