I need help in picking out a muzzle brake. The brake that has been recomended to me by a gunsmith in fort worth is the shrewd brake from brownells. I was looking at the Holland ad. But he said if I was shooting next to someone the Holland might be much for them. What do yall recomend.the gun is a rem sendero Sf 2 in 300 win mag.

Re: need help with muzzle break

They all work fine, and all have side muzzle blast effects. Most guys will recommend what they are familiar with. I personally like APA little bastard, Holland, and KDF on hunting type rifles. Keep in mind that Holland brake need to be timed, and require more work. Some guys don't want to deal with timing brakes either. If you like the Holland, buy it, and find a guy that will install what you want, not what he thinks is better for him. Best of luck.

If you'll ever be shooting prone pass on the Shrewd, Vias or any other 360 degree porting brake. For prone use the APA Little Basterd, Badger Thruster or any other side venting brake. I have a side venting brake made for me that I use on my builds but it has to be reamed/bored to the desired caliber, crowned and then turned down and blended.

Personally, I dont like the Holland because of it's size but thats just me. Like ozzy said, 99.9% of side venting brakes will work.

Re: need help with muzzle break

If consideration for my neighbors influenced my decision on a muzzle brake I would still buy the most effective brake but would make sure I could remove it when needed. Unless the design is so blatantly offensive (e.g. directly blasts neighbors)

Seems to be a bit of a losing battle trying to accommodate the potential for someone who sensitive to the noise and blast of a braked gun to be offended.

Re: need help with muzzle break

I have the surefire muzzle brake and i LOVE it. Even if i never get a sound supressor for it the brake keeps the gun on target and kills recoil.

I like the Holland Radial brake and Badger FTE. I have them on different calibers but both seem to be very effective. I understand the Vais brakes are effective and have minimal impact on accuracy - but they have holes on the bottom which isn't that fun when shooting in the dirt.

I did have the Miculek brake on two guns - although I can't pin down anything offensive in the design I got several complaints about both (one is on an AR15 and the other was on a 308) The 308 now wears the Holland Radial which feels more effective and hasn't garnered any complaints. Although the size doesn't bother me - I would agree that it *is* a big (wide) brake. I bought the Miculeks originally because they look effective and had nuts so they didn't need to be timed. The Holland was highly recommend by my gunsmith and I switched to it when getting a new barrel.

The FTE I bought because I wanted something removable, for those times when a brake isn't allowed.

Re: need help with muzzle break

First, which ever brake you choose make sure it threads on 5/8x24, class 3A fit to a gauge, not the brake.

If it's a brake thats going to come off and on, get the RAD brake.

Never coming off, APA LB, Badger Thruster or simular.

Re: need help with muzzle break

It's not a big deal about the timing on those brakes that have to be lined up. Me and a buddy have them we interchange with different guns and we just use a rubber O ring which lets it snug up nicely when aligned. If it looks like it needs to be turned a bit more or less use a bit thicker or thinner O ring. It don't let the brake have a seamless fit but it works great and don't tie your gun up waiting for the smith to get it fitted for you.
