Since I do not own a chrono yet, does anyone know of any software that you can put your load data in and rifle specs and come up with a rather close approx of muzzle velocity?

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Zero rifle, gather DOPE on targets are multiple distances, the further the better. Input rifle specs into a good ballistics calc and then adjust MV to match gathered dope.

I dont even use chronos anymore. If you put good numbers into this method it gives you good numbers back.

I use Shooter on my smart phone, but other programs such as JBM which s free and online will work.

Or you can talk to someone who has quick load.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Thx Man... Thats actually what I did at my range yesterday. I can only shoot out to 200 there. I used Shooter and Bullet flight and it said that the load I used, to adjust 8 clicks (1.9MOA) up... well, 8 clicks put me about 3 inches high at 200 yards. I adjusted the fps to come down on the clicks (6 clicks up from my zero of 100) and that put me right in there. So, I had to adjust the MV from 2700 fps to 2750 fps
Guess its gonna take some longer shots to get more DOPE.

Thanks man

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Yea 200 wont give you enough info to back into a good velocity, try to get a 500 and as close to 1k as you can, 800 or 900 will work also. The more info and the further the better.

Good luck man. Half the time the hardest part about this is finding a range that will let you shoot that far.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Break down and buy a chrono. Its worth having.

If you do plan on doing the reverse engineering method then make sure your scope tracks perfectly. If not you are putting bad info in and will get bad info out of any ballistic program.

Not disagreeing with buying a chrono, but wouldn't it actually be more beneficial to do reverse engineering like that if your scope doesn't track perfectly?? As long as you use the same software, that muzzle velocity(whether its right or wrong) is gonna get you to the right places because it takes into account your scope tracking. BUT, if you use an actual chrono'd velocity, you are gonna be off because of your tracking.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Its always better to have a scope that tracks as it is intended but if you have to use wrong velocity to get it to work then go for it but then when you get a different scope you will have to do it all again.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

Figuring out your MV from drop without knowing your environmental conditions offers limited value too. Get a chrono but if not at least make sure you accurately record environmental data.

Agreed.

He brings up a good point... Do you have a kestrel or something that accurately measures atmosphere? Those whether station estimates that your iphone or ballistic software pulls up are basically only accurate if your shooting on top of the nearest airport. If you dont have accurate atmospheric data, you might as well just use published MV for the load(or estimate) and call it a day.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

The airport is right down the road... I planned on buying a chrono, just havent yet. Might order this week.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

I agree get a chrono, great for development but back calculating a value will get you close.

Re: FPS Calculator software ????

I agree with the Krestel. I am going to order a the M2 CED Chrono and order a Krestel soon.
