Good morning gents! It has FINALLY come time to buy an optic for my rifle! The poor thing has been sitting in the safe alll by itself for months and months.... never even being fired. Its time to hurry up and change that!

I was originally planning on picking up a illuminated SWFA SS 5-20x50. But then I noticed that it was missing the one feature I was really hoping to get... zero stop.

In reality is it something I really need? No... this is my first precision rifle so It'll be years before Im good enough (if ever) to really make use of such a feature especially with a mil-dot reticle. Its one of those things that i just want so I have the ability to HOPEfully grow into it. Figure if youre in for $1500... will an extra hundred or two really matter.

That being said, what other scopes are you guys aware of that offer similar magnification, set up in mils, illuminated, and also has the zero stop feature?

I'm damn near giddy just thinking about buying a scope finally!

Thanks gents!
~Ryan

Re: Optic with zero stop... suggestions

We have two Vortex Viper PST 4-15 with zero stops on our long range pistols and they are nice especially for our 1000 yard matches being able to drop down quickly to our zero and do our come-ups for each distance. Nice feature and a great scope for the money.

We also have one SS 5-20 from the SH group buy on a rifle but the zero stop is not missed on that gun. We can shoot from 200 to 1000 yards in one revolution. You wouldn't be making multiple revolutions on the scope so it's easy to just drop down to zero and do your come-ups. For the price it's another great scope.

Zero stops are a nifty feature but after a bit of use and being a bit careful when making your adjustments it really is something you can live without. Every shooter at one time or another will forget to make the adjustment or be on the wrong revolution so getting to know your scope will really help. It's easy to just see how many revolutions you are from bottom if you don't have the stop. Scopes are like everything else, good basic equipment will do the job but having more goobers can make life easier sometimes.

You are probably looking for a nightforce NXS 5.5-22 or a vortex razor 5-20.

On the ZS issue... Run the SWFA on a 20MOA base and you'll have your 100yd zero inside the first revolution. No brainer from there.

this would be great to know. you've got the right frame of mine going, spending a little extra to get something that makes your life easier is always a great idea. personally, i like zero stops, the vortex pst type zero stop helps, but it's really nice to have a solid stop like in the razor and in the nightforce line of scopes. i always opt for it when i can get it, and most people who downplay a zero stop or say it isn't worth the money, probably havn't used it.

just for instance, last season, i set my zero stop on my 280AI rifle at 200 yards. rather that setting the visible zero on the turret back to zero, i doped my scope to 550 yards (the back edge of a field i was hunting) and set the visible zero there. i just make myself two easy zero's by doing that, i cranked my scope to my long zero when it was day light, and when the sun started going down, and i felt the deer were more likely to come out closer, i just turned the turret till it stopped, and i'm on the 200 yard zero.

there are a ton of other uses, but it's great to know positively that you are back on your zero, even if you can't see your turret or you don't want to take your eye out of the scope.

Vortex Razor HD is an outstanding scope and has what you are looking for. Scott at Liberty Optics will take care of you.

Re: Optic with zero stop... suggestions

I stopped by Mile High Shooting to pick up stuff and they brought out the new Bushnell Tactical. Sweet looking scope and it has large knobs that will zero. With a 34mm tube its should have a lot of adjustment.

Re: Optic with zero stop... suggestions

To answer everyones questions.... This is going to be a "little of everything" sort of rifle. Its a Savage Precision Carbine with a AAC 762SDN-6. I'll be using it for everything from punching paper on a bench and trying to hone my long range skills (Hope to try and stretch my skills to 800 yards + one day) all the way to deer/elk hunting and a little pig and prairie dog blasting. It'd be nice to have something thats very useable to cover the entire spectrum.... seems alot of tactical scopes offer that sort of thing.

Heck, maybe 5-20 magnification would be a bit too much for this sort of application. I honestly don't have the experience to know what magnification levels would be best for my style shooting. Just kinda figured the widest spread would be best. Maybe I would be better suited with a 4-16... any insight on that debacle?

Re: Optic with zero stop... suggestions

USO EREK functions as a zero stop knob if you want it to.

Watch the Vortex PST zero stop vids where they use shims. It turns a quarter turn past zero, stops, then is turned back to zero. The USO works basically the same (though you can tune it to less than a quarter turn if you like) but does not use shims.

Yea, for my go-to scopes, they are all EREKs with the zero feature set the same.

Small knobbed scopes with no zero stop are very easy to get off a turn with. Watched many a shooter get off a turn, elevation and windage both, with Lupy M1 knobs. Don't even want to go there.

FFP vs SFP
Magnification
Reticle
Zero stop
30 vs 34 vs 35
Mil vs MOA

Get behind the glass you are looking at and see what works for you

You also need to be honest with yourself as to how it will really be used.

Re: Optic with zero stop... suggestions

I bought a PST just before xmas and did not hook up the zero stop till just recently? Now that I have it I love it!! I'm now bummed the rest of my scopes do not have it.
I will buy my next scope with zero stop. It is just that much easier then without!
