I've been looking around, and am interested in FN's SPR. Question is, what makes the A5's run $700 more than the A1's? The only difference I can see is the stock. Is the A5 worth the extra coin? Also, in general, how well do they actually shoot with their chrome lined barrels?

Re: FN SPR

From my understanding the 700 bucks is for a lil better made barrel and the DBM. I have the A3G and yes the can hold their groups and the other thing I have been finding out most barrels are only rated for 5,000 rounds or so where my A3G is rated for 10,000 rounds. But If I had to do it over again I would get the A5 or go with a GAP.

Re: FN SPR

(Woops, I thought you were asking about the A3G, not the A1. My response is in regards to the A3G)

1/2 MOA guarantee instead of 1 MOA like the other SPR's. Bedded with Marine-tex (GAP used to bed them, not sure if they still do) as well as a titanium skeletonized rail. Overall it's a higher quality weapon that gets more attention when it's put together. The "10,000 round" barrel life is due to chrome lined barrels, which all of the SPR's have. Honestly I think the A3G is on par with a lot of the custom rifles. It carries a phenomenal accuracy guarantee and is built on a stellar action. It's bedded into a McMillan stock, and with the chrome lined barrel it will last a long time before needing to be rebarreled. The only arguably weak point is the lack of AICS bottom metal.

Re: FN SPR

I have the spr a5. It is skim bedded and is consistently .5 moa (sometimes .25 moa) at 100 yards. The only thing I added was a 3lb timney trigger (BIG improvement). The a5 stock and skim bedding are the only difference between the a5 and a1. The a3g has the full glass bedded action and the parkerized finish. If u want AICS mags then you can get CDI bottom metal.

Straight from a phone call with FN - They all use the same actions and barrels. Stock style, barrel lengths, bedding, and finish are the only variables. I would get the a5 so you get the stock with all the bells and whistles.

You get a fully adjustable stock at A1 prices.

Re: FN SPR

I've had an A1 for a couple of years. Mine is roll-marked "Fredricksburg, VA", and was bedded at the front lug, rear tang, and under the bottom-metal. The rifle shoots well but having to do over again, I'd get whichever one had an adjustable stock.

Re: FN SPR

I would suggest getting one from tacticalcoordination.com

They start at $1545 and have 24" factory barrel and are bedded in McMillan A4 stocks. I don't know if FN built these but I know tacticalcoordination stands behind their products. Then add bottom metal.

I sent mine to short action customs to have it pillar and epoxy bedded, have it inletted for cdi precision bottom metal, install badger bolt knob, and install cg x-treme mod 22 2-stage trigger. I also have a YHM Ti Phantom for it. I should have it back next week.

This is BAD advice. Some online dealers have purchased FN actions and built guns with them and they have NO factory warranty. If you are thinking along these lines ask for the serial # of the gun they plan to sell you and check with FN and see if it was made like the gun they are shipping and in fact will have a FULL factory warranty. The model #'s some dealers are offering have been discontinued and didn't even come from the factory with fluted barrels.

You can purchase these guns that are current models with FULL factory warranty for less than $2000. They will come from the factory bedded and with a fluted barrel if you choose.

As said before Tactical Coordination will stand behind there product. You get the same rifle in a nicer stock than the A1 for less money.

Mine has been every bit as reliable an accurate as my A1a but it was cheaper new than the A1a was used and the stock is much nicer.

I didn't say anything about Tac-Cord, I only said that FN will not honor the warranty on guns that have been pieced together from sources other than the FACTORY.

FN offers the model #75532 SPR A5M and that has the McMillan A5 stock with the fluted barrel for under $2000.

Not a gun that has been pieced together with parts from various sources.

When I say Tactical Coordination will stand behind their product I effectively mean warranty.

They are factory chrome lined barrels, factory receivers, bolts etc. It's about as factory as you can get. It's not some cobbled together gun. It has no parts besides the stock that aren't FN.

Where can you get an A5M under $2k?

Re: FN SPR

I just spoke with Mike from tactical coordination and these are FN built guns. They were offered a couple of years ago but he said McMillan was backlogged on the stocks so not many were available. I wish I had my serial handy to call FN and verify but I am at work. I am flying to New Jersey tonight for some dental implant training but I will confirm this with my serial when I get back.

I don't doubt what he says though because every single part is FN. I know there are rifles just built on spare actions but these aren't them.
