Bullet Information

I have recently started reloading and there has been a question bugging me for a while and hopefully the Hide can answer it. Is there any ballistic coefficient difference between a hollow point and a full metal jacket bullet of identical grain? I have been reading and I noticed that the most common bullet for long distance .308 shooting is the Sierra Matchking 175 grain boat tail hollow point. I am just wondering what advantages there are with the hp as opposed to the fmj. I would love to know any insight you guys might have on the subject.

Re: Bullet Information

BC is a function of the shape of the bullet, not necessarily the jacket design and weight.

As far as the HPBT (Open Tip Match to some) design of the Matchkings and Berger VLD's is concerned the hollow point moves weight out of the tip to reduce wobble. An FMJ is made by punching a jacket then inserting a lead slug from the base. The formed bullet is then swaged and canalurred.

For a HPBT a similar method is used except the slug is inserted from the tip and the bullet shaped and swaged. The "Hollow Point" is not made to expand but to move weight out of it. If the bullet point is not quite concentric the hollow tip has less influence over the spin of the bullet.
