I am building a long range bolt action hunting rifle based off a REM 700 action, chambered in 300 RUM. I have a JAE stock and nightforce optics, but currently am using the stock REM SPS barrel. I am looking to upgrade the barrel to 28-30in barrel so I can truly reach out and touch something. I am looking for an outstanding barrel, preferably carbon wrapped to increase strength and reduce weight as it is already a heavy rifle. I am new to piecing rifles together so i am looking for any recommendations as well as gunsmithing options/pricing.

Re: Carbon Fiber wrapped barrel options

There are a number of excellent gun builders floating around here. Two of my personal top choices have largely retired from building stuff and I'm down to myself (and I don't take outside work because I'm just making my stuff) or Mark Gordon from Short Action Customs.

Other guys that I have no trouble recommending though would be:

Louisiana Precision with William Roscoe
Gradous Rifles with Robert Gradous
American Precision Arms (?) with Jered Joplin

If you go with a carbon wrapped barrel you'll be getting 1 but not both of those benefits.

You can't take a material that is 29.3 MSI and replace it with a material that is appx 6.5 MSI and expect an increase in strength.

The 300 RUM has a very shoot barrel life, well under 1000rd. Any of the CF wrapped barrels cost around $1000 before it goes to the gunsmith so just on the barrel you're going to spend at least $1/rd if not $2/rd before anything else is considered.

Re: Carbon Fiber wrapped barrel options

An alternative approach that serves your described intentions and also offers a real improvement in managing barrel heating, which is something that is debatable with carbon wrap. Read the entire description including the part abouut the services of their specialist.

But it's also not cheap.

Call up Benchmark Barrels and talk to Chris. I had them buld me a 6.5-284 with a nitrided/carbon wrapped barrel. ABS is the company that actually wrapped it, but Benchmark did all the smithing. The accuracy was amazing and the price wasn't bad at all.
