Hello,

I'm a new member. From Mississippi. Have always enjoyed Snipers hide but have never posted

I'm in the process of having a custom tactical rifle built and need some input....specifically on magazines for the 7 SAUM

Here's what I'm using so far

1. A Remington 700 Long action....will have the bolt face redone for the magnum cartridge

2. Manners MCS-GAT stock with 90% fill....trying to get as light weight a rifle as possible. They claim 2.8 lbs possible

Along with the Manners stock I'm contemplating also ordering the Manners MCS-DBM Mini Chassis to make things ez on my smith

3. Pacnor Light Palma barrel finished at 27 inches .075 at muzzle...threaded for break 1-9 twist 3 groove...will attempt to shoot 175-185 grain bullets

My question is along item #2....I'm not exactly sure what size additional AI mags to order on the MCS-DBM Mini Chassis the 300 Win Mag based or the WSM based.

The whole idea of building a short mag on a long action was so that I could seat my bullets out further and not be as limited by the magazine length

Many Thanks for your input

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

im not positive but im pretty sure ai magazines only come in 3 standard sizes: .223 short action, .308 based short action, and magnum based long action. i don't think there's a specific magazine for the 7saum/wsm. you would just use the long action magnum magazine provided that its compatible with your action and stock.

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

get the 338 lapua mags

have you considered getting an 8.5 twist ?

just in case you want to try the new 195g bergers

why limit yourself from the start, especailly with a long action.

Do you have 7saum brass or are you going to work 300saum?

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

I have one built on a Long Action Remington 700. I just use the Remington standard BDL plate. It has a 30" Krieger fluted barrel and a match grade chamber. Haven't really grouped it yet at long distances but I have one shot kills at 610 and 422 yards on whitetail.. I love the gun it's self. I also have a Model 7 in 7mm SAUM and 300 SAUM. No better truck gun out there..

Remington 700 Action
Krieger 1/9 twist std 4 groove sendero grade barrel Fluted.
Finished out at 30".
Chamber - match reamer
Neck .315 - .175 free bore
Trued and blueprinted. (bolt doesn't move)
Cases necked down 10,000th's
Ogive is at 2.338

Maybe some of these numbers might help you..

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

I'm running a 7mm WSM in a Surgeon short mag action and Alpha mags. I have no problem seating the 180VLD hunting Bergers long shooting at 2930fps. I have case capacity room to run them faster, but that is where any accuracy node is. I just had to notch my feed ramps, but everything feeds reliably.

You may want to consider a faster twist such as 1 in 8.5", it will help with the heavier bullets. Berger is suppose to be coming out with a 190gr VLD soon.

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

well I have decided to give 300 Win Mag sized magazines a go. I could have fed out of the ADL but was talked into going with the external AI type mags...which I admit I'm not that familiar with

My smith think's they will work fine. This is also what folks at Manners recommended.

I realize that they may require some "smithing"....Hope not too much

The 1:9 twist 3 groove light Palma type Pacnor barrel is on order. plan is to finish it at 27 inches, thread it (just in case I wanna run a suppressor) and put a break on it

Time will tell I guess if I made the right decisions.

For now my plan is to shoot Remington Brass...If that does not pan out or the case prep becomes too much I'll probably try and neck down some 300 WSM brass as others have done.

I have access to a good annealing machine so keeping my brass together hopefully is not too bad.

Thanks for the replies folks....I see the 7mm Rem SAUM does not have too great a following......I just wanted a nice light weight rifle that a old man could shoot in a tactical match or two and maybe bust a few whitetails...

Hope I do not regret my decision.

My biggest worry right now is whether or not the Mags I get are tunable by the smith....I want 100% reliablilty....LOL

Got matching 20 MOA Farrel G force bases and 30mm standard rings coming as well. Gonna run a Bushnell Tactical 6500 4.5-30x50.

I'm a little worried about the ring height....but figured the med rings would be too high....

A total custom build is always a "joy"...LOL

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

Why are you using a L/A? I had 5 7wsm build on S/A's..... All shot 180gr VLDS 2.935 out of AICS mags....... One rifle I shot to 2k rounds and jumped them with no problems.

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

I don't want to derail this but have you considered the 284? It seems you already have the standard bolt face LA that would handle the 284 with the long bullets just fine.

I shoot against some guys using 180 hybrids and are pushing them to about 2,900 FPS. You might get a little more speed out of the 7SAUM but it seems you would have less smith work to be done.

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

All things being equal...I wanted to be less limited by magazine size on my Overall lengths on my ammo.

From what I have seen shooting F class...Berger VLD's like to be loaded real long and I wanted all the room possible

Not saying I'm right....but that was my "reasoning"

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

Reason I chose 7mm Rem SAUM

I liked the short and fat 6mm BR's my buddies were shootn...and wanted to shoot a heavier bullet to buck the wind beyond 600 yards with better barrel life

Barrel I ordered has a 5 inch shank so I don't think I'll have any trouble setting the barrel back at least once

In short the real reason I chose it...It turned me on....LOL

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

I understand completely.

I shoot a 243 and when I saw my buddies 243WSSM I had to have it! It took me a while but I finally got a gun that he wanted from me so now I own the WSSM and love it but the coyotes hate it! LOL

There is something about the short fat cases that can do that to a person.

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

Reasons I came up with to "justify" the build

well I shoot 175 SMK's at 2750 fps in F-class with a 308

I have a closet full of short action rifles...and several 300 win mag hunting guns...not a 7mm in sight...cept a deer slayin 280 rem

wanted to do something just a little different...a fairly light weight mountain type class ("TACTICOOL") that I could shoot a 1000 at...my 308 just aint quite got it at a thou...figured a 175 grain smk in a 7mm Ren SAUM at 2950 or so would be just the difference to get me into 1000 yard shootn...with same recoil basically as a 308 Win that I'm shootn now

You can drive 180's at 3000 fps with less powder than a WSM

Plus I like that longer neck on the SAUM...less throat erosion (in theory) I guess....less powder required as well....less powder...longer barrel life

Putting it all in a long action lets me get away with loading bullets longer...more wiggle room in there

and like I said...wanted one...my biggest fear is obtaining brass...one other thing I don't like is LE Wilson doesn't make dies for this cartridge...

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

Don't worry, the 7mm SAUM in a long-action will be a great rifle with awesome ballistics. What barrel contour did you go with?

Re: New Rifle Build - 7 mm SAUM

Pac-nor's light Palma

http://www.pac-nor.com/contours/

1.23 at shank .750 at muzzle

suppose to come in about 5 lbs at 27 inches.I'm hoping with Manners MCS-T1 stock,90% Carbon fill option 2.1 lbs - complete rifle will weigh 12 lbs or less when complete..I might be dreaming..its hard to tell really...the Manners Bottom metal built by Badger is suppose to be about .62 lbs..........Scope 21 ounces...rings and bases maybe 10 ounces

light enough to carry and be mobile for tactical/comp/occassional hunting use...heavy enough to minimize perceived recoil and hopefully that barrel doesn't heat too bad after several firings in a few min...fingers crossed...I have plenty of heavy barreled guns....Gonna try going the other way this time.

I really struggled with the light Palma vs Med Palma contour for a while
