OK, I started out looking at a DPMS .308 recon. Was almost 95% sure on it last week until I got on this darn website and others. The more research I do, the more nuts I get. LOL. Looking for 33% target shooting, 33% deer hunting, and 33% tacticool fun. Got to have a HBAR. 18" min barrel would be nice but can work with 16".

The PredatOBR 7.62 in an 18" barrel is looking damn awesome right now, but I'm trying my best to justify going from the dpms .308 recon @ $1350 to the predatobr .308 $3k..... Do you think the weight of it will be ok for hunting?

The GAP 10 with PRS stock is really bad a$$ also, BUT isn't it a much heavier rifle? Would actually like the GAP 10 more, but the weight of it kills it for me and pushes me back to the larue predatobr. Remember, I would like to use this deer hunting also.

Or should I just save my money and stick with the DPMS .308 recon with a 16" mid length ss barrel??? Heck, for the price difference i could get another AR-15 for target shooting which wouldnt be bad either.

Does anyone here own the following?

DPMS .308 recon, PredatOBR 7.62, and GAP 10 with some advice please. Need some help pushing me in the right direction.

thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking about that, but doesn't the groupings kinda go to hell once the barrel heats up not having a HBAR? or am I thinking about this too much? good to know, will look into this. Thanks for the info.

Buy what you really want........don't look back!!!!

Re: Driving myself crazy with new AR .308 purchase.

dpms all the way if money is a concern, I have a r-25 which is a dpms, and it shoots half MOA all day long with good ammo, swap the trigger out and it will be a huge improvement.

Re: Driving myself crazy with new AR .308 purchase.

I have a dpms that I pretty much built myself. I bought a stripped lower, dropped in a timney trigger and a magpul prs stock. The rest was dpms stuff. I went ahead and bought the complete 20 inch bbl upper and went to shooting. Shoots around .75 inch with me, but I forsee half an inch with reloaded ammo. Good luck.

Re: Driving myself crazy with new AR .308 purchase.

If it matters, the predatobr is probably going to be a 5-6 month wait time.

Do you need the port selector ? If so, get the OBR or Predatobr. There's a number of reasons to wait for the predatobr, IMHO.

If not, the GAP-10 is probably the way to go. Gap should be able to use a diff profile barrel to get you some weight savings. If they can't, then I'd go for the larue. I think they are 60 days or so for a build ?

A 16" in either rifle should give you around 2450 ft/sec or more with a 175 SMK (based on my PM sampling). Both will come with a 1:11.25.

A buddy of mine uses his predatar for hunting. His shoots very well. I think they do open up when the barrel is hot. Nothing crazy tho. I didn't see a sub MOA rifle turn into a 5" rifle or anything like that.

If you're in the DFW area, check out Lone Star Armory. Saw them at the suppressor shoot this weekend. They had a badass 16" that sounds like a home run. The owner is Andrew and he's a cool guy. He supports the shooting community. Give him a buzz or email. It's certainly worth checking out. http://lonestararmory.net/contact

And, saying 1/2 MOA without yardage really opens you up. You are telling me that you can shoot 1/2 MOA at 500 yards with a stock R-25? Need pictures of this. BTW, I have a DPMS AP4 on 308 and I know I can't do it...may be 1 MOA on a good day with reloads. I also have a GAP SASS with a Bartlein barrel and can't hold 1/2 MOA very often - more like 3/4 MOA at best.

Re: Driving myself crazy with new AR .308 purchase.

I have a GAP-10 that shoots 1/2 all day long when I do my job (no coffee that morning helps). 1/4 inch groups are possible but I think the platform is not a mach for your usage. It is a very heavy rifle so I will not use it for deer hunting for that reason. Good gun for target shooting though...

Ok, this is what I came up with.

I put some serious thought into getting a OBR or even a GAP 10. I came to the conclusion, do I realy need to spend twice the amount of money for a rifle that can do .5" over a 1" moa rifle??? Am I in competition? No. As much as I wanted the OBR or GAP 10, I just couldn't justify paying twice the amount for my needs 33% target shooting, 33% deer hunting, and 33% tacticool fun.

So I went back to my original idea of getting the dpms .308 recon for my "do-it-all" kind of gun,,,, and even kicked in a rock river arms 5.56 tactical operator 2 for cheap ammo target fun for less than I would pay for the one "high end rifle". I ordered them both and they set me back $2350 (for both rifles new in box) which I thought was a good deal. Waiting on the dpms .308 recon... I got the RRA 5.56 home already. I think this suits me best and I'll have more fun with the two rifles i think. I will prob get flamed to death for this, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money for a OBR or GAP 10,,, and I think gmphk hit it right on the head... the gun is too darn heavy. Even came close to a $2500 dollar light weight predatAR larue, but the price tag killed it for me. Besides the fact i think I'll have more fun with the two rifles. Always wanted a ar-15 too as I've never owned one before.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's input and I'll try to post some picks of my groupings (on both rifles) once I get my dpms .308 recon in.

Thanks again!
