I'm thinking of building a SBR and are wondering what calibers I should look into. The weapon will be used for mostly HD/SD plinking and maybe to take out a critter if need or just was handy at the time. The weapon will be suppressed in the end and looking to keep barrel length under 10" w/can. Not sure if I want to go pistol caliber but if I do I'm looking mostly at 10mm as the pistol caliber. I do know that there are some rifle caliber like 300blackout but don't know anything about them. What do you guys with SBR think as far as caliber and rifle/pistol chambering.

Re: SBR caliber

List every caliber you can think of that way you will have every option available. Pretty much whatever caliber is do able with the Ar15 platform.

Re: SBR caliber

ok next question is. Is there anything special about the lower of (ar-15) to depending on what caliber you end up choosing. Should I know what caliber I'm going to build before I order my lower and send in the tax stamp funds. Or can any ar-15 lower be made to work with any caliber?

Re: SBR caliber

If you are going SBR drop a MRP from LMT on top. This give you the best platform for any caliber option you could want. I run mine with 5.56 with a 22lr conversion for the 5.56 barrels, one is 18” and one is 10.5”. I also had a 5” 9mm converted to run in the MRP. My last pick up was a 300blk from Noveske that I had converted also. This set up gives you many options for calibers and lengths you might want to use now or in the future.

If you have to go with just one caliber then I would go with the 300aac Blackout, it is a blast to shoot.

Re: SBR caliber

Love my 6.8 SBR's, BUT they are very loud. I don't shoot them much without a suppressor.

Honestly, my favorite SBR's are 9mm. With TROS barrels and any version of the WW 147gr subsonic JHP (SXT, RA9T, 147 bonded) they shoot one ragged hole @ 50 yds, and it's ONLY 19.5 MILS to bang steel all day long @ 400 with the 8 incher.

5 incher will fit in a large messenger bag!

1000 rnds of good plinking ammo is $225; 1000 rounds of the best is less than $500 - really hard to beat the 9 for "the funnest gun in the cabinet".

147 subsonic is pretty quiet without a suppressor...I'd have no problem still hearing after 32 rounds indoors in a terrifying encounter....doubt seriously I would hear well after a mag of 6.8 from a 10 incher.

Did I mention the shorter one fits in a messenger bag???? Hard to beat the 9.

Re: SBR caliber

The MRP is a bit high to get into but then you are set. To make a change you only have to get a barrel and perhaps a bolt too. No need to get a whole new upper, you save some money there. No need to get new optics, save a lot of money there. No need to get comfortable with a new rifle, priceless!
