Im just getting into reloading, and my new rifle is finally on its way here. I have a R700 action, 26" match grade barrel. I'm wondering where i should start with reloading, any good recipes to give me a starting point? Brands of powder? Bullets? Primers? i'm planning on doing long range targets(hopefully over 1000yds), Mule deer and elk hunting.

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

Also where i'm new i need to decide on a press and a measurer .What brand and style is your favorite is YOUR favorite. If you could give me a brief rundown on your setup that would be much appreciated. I'm planning on putting in a big order through my gun club in the middle of the week.

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

Take the time to actually read the reloading section for all of your questions - they have been asked numerous times. Understand that while the 'gear' is important - the repetition of the skill is what produces consistent results at a distance.

Start with a box of factory ammo. Shoot them and save the brass. Get an RCBS Precision Mic and run each of these cases through it. Use the average of the 20 cases to set your dies.

There is a whole section on Mag reloading for recipes. I like 72.0 of RE22 under a Berger 210 with a prep'd Win case.

Get a copy of 'Precision Shooting's Reloading Guide' as well as a standard reloading manual. Read the standard manual - all of it. Then read the PS guide. Read as much of the reloading section here as you can.

Try not to just skim these for what you are looking for - read them and attempt to absorb what is being discussed.

Good luck

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

I'd definitely agree! There is alot to factor in. Barrel type, length bullet weight and shape. Full length resizing or fire formed with neck sizing only, setting COAL and if your rifle even like the bullet brand, weight or even muzzle velocity that works best. Do alot of research and find a dedicated reloader that does precision shooting. Good luck!

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

Thats why i'm here is too get more info, i've been staring at this site for weeks now trying to figure out what gun, etc. etc. I have the gun on its way, there is just so much info to learn. I've spent countless hrs on here trying to decide which route i wanna take. thats why i'm trying to find out several recipes and take a majority that i feel good about and start from there. From other friends i've gathered that the H1000 powder and the berger bullets are a good combo(all guns are different). But just wondering what you guys are thinking. Thanks for that recipe! keep em coming! <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: distantplinker</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I'd definitely agree! Re: 300 WM reloading questions

I use a blue printed Rem700 with a 30" Krieger barrel. 190gn SMK with 69.3gn RL-22. With the barrel length I use less powder and it runs 2980fps. I'm getting just under 5" groups at 1000yds. Thank God the rifle weighs alot so I can shoot all day and without hearing protection.

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

So I'm leaning toward the t7 press, how much better are the mic'd competition dies?

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

I would recommend them since it is a custom rifle. The more consistent and particular you are when "fine" tuning your loads you will be able to squeeze every variable into your accuracy. Most people never spend the time to do it but like any other hobby or like me it's an OCD thing. I spent the money to get as good as I can get it. No matter how many classes I've taught or taken there is something else to be done to shoot better whether it be shooting technique or reloading. I'm not an art lover or anything but Picasso and Monet did not only use a few colors or techniques - they used everything they could. True reloaders are artists of shooting. It's a personal pride thing. Sorry - Soap box over

Ha, ok thanks. In your opinion, if I'm going redding press, should I do redding comp dies? Out id there something else that someone likes better? <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: distantplinker</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I would recommend them since it is a custom rifle. Re: 300 WM reloading questions

Hard to say. Opinions are like, well ME... you know the saying. But really I am stuck on old school single stage RCBS presses. I've had the same one for 15+ years and it works like a champ. However I've seen Dillon, RCBS, Lyman, Redding all work great and I've seen all brands take a big leap in the trash too. I think they can all work good it's all bad luck when you get a garbage one IMO. Look at overall accessories that you might want or need. I do see alot of people sticking with one brand when they do start... probably all the ghastly colors each brand has and would freak me out seeing them all mixed.

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

either people love them or hate them but the forster CO-AX is very nice to me because of the way it collects spent primers(If you have run an RCBS rock chucker you will know what I mean because primers and carbon will be everywhere)and the fact that it does not need a ton of shell holders for all the different cartridges I shoot...2 sets of jaws cover it all. expensive press but wont need anything else when you pickup a new caliber besides dies with proper die lock rings...

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

That sound better. Maybe I need to break my old rockchucker now. That's one I don't know about but sounds great. If you got the money and are doing multiple calibers... go with that one. I would if I started over...and I haven't even looked it up yet.

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

I'm guessing a 1:10 twist on your stick so go with the heavy bullets. I shoot 208 amax's & 210 bergers with a 26 " barrel and am hitting right at 2900 fps at the muzzle. The good thing about the .300 is how cheap the brass is. I personally shoot Remington brass bc of how strong the primer pockets are and how easy it is to anneal, but have bought many a bags of Winchester with just as good results, just not longevity. IMHO I am loading hot and win brass has a tendency to wear out too quick. But an upside is with the win brass sizing is alot easier bc of it's thin case. R22, h1000, ram mag, retumbo, imr4350...... All good powders Just do your HOMEWORK. Welcome to reloading!!

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

Thanks aimsmall, i think i'm going to try buying a little bit of several things to start off with so i can mix match and try to create good recipe for the new cannon. and yes it is a 1:10 twist. all this info is helping alot, keep er coming!

Re: 300 WM reloading questions

I just came from the range, working up loads for the new Berger hybrids, 215 and 230 grains, with H1000 I got to 73.3 grains in the 230 s and 75.5 in the 215s. New win brass. Cci 250 primers. Without pressure signs. They have high bc's and should do well beyond 1000 yds. Getting 2800fps and change out of the 215s and just under 2700 in the 230s. I started seating them kissing the lands and will fine tune OAL.
Good luck!
