I just got assigned to a Team and will be in a Sniper position as well as entery. I was wondering what gear you guys have for your Sniper pack. This is for Law Enforcement not Military. If you have photographs that would be great. Any ideas or things you have learned would be great also. I have a basic pack but would like to get some ideas. Thanks in advance.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

I started with a back pack. No I have pretty much everything I need in a mission go bag. Some snacks, data book, nvg's, binos, etc.

Talk with the guys on your team, check for department policies, after a few call outs you'll see what you need and don't need.
Feel free to PM me if you need also.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

Get Some sick glass, as in binos. German for sure. Leica, Zeiss or Swaro (Austrians are basically german.)

For LE Marksmanship a 10x Canon IS bino might be a really good investment considering close range to target and the IS feature is a must have.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

Also on the bino topic. Alot of the time you try to get the high ground like roofs, etc. So binos with a strap is a plus because you'll need your hands for climbing

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

+1 on the LAPG backpack. I use one as my hunting pack, and that thing takes a beating. It's still in one piece, and for $30 how could you go wrong?

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

I would pack accordingly for the type of area you will operate in. Are you in the city, soccer mom area, shopping malls, country, or all the above? What kind of rifle set up are you going to be using? Have you spoken with the other team menbers that have filled this role, or neighboring agency? I use a Eberlestock and have everything from pruning sheers to rear bags, to power bars and a medic kit. Knowing what kind of gun your gonna run and the area you will be working in will help us help you congrats on the new position.

entery is very LE snipery

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

Seems to be alot of that cross training multi-purpose stuff going on due to cut backs and budgets.

For most departments "sniper" isn't a starting position. Usually you're patrol. Try out for SWAT. Once on SWAT your lower ranking guys are on perimeter and after awhile make it to the entry level. Then out of the entry guys you can try out for snipers.

But by the time you make it there you're gained alot of experience in other roles and sometime you don't need to use all of the snipers and need more entry guys. So a sniper qualified guy will make entry.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

I was being funny haha, joking along with daybreak. I am very well aware of the progression of perimeter to entry then sniper sorry for the confusion.

Very very very true....

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

To be an actual " sniper" you should have been on an entry team first and know Entry, observation, assault techniques etc. Youll need to relay that info to your entry team, prior to and during their arrival to the location.

Nowadays, le snipers are patrolman that qual with a scoped rifle. Sad but true.

As far as stuff to pack. Water, food, a mat( a tar roof is hot in summer) 550, just to name a few. Food and water are most important, youll be waiting a while, while your brass decides what to do.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

Need to add a "to scale" plot map of your city, showing all buildings, etc., and a ruler of some sort (should be on your compas).

Then you can get accurate range from your spot to the target spot.

Also, plot maps are flat, like USGS maps, meaning if you are on top of building A and your target is on the ground floor of building B, you don't need to figure angles.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

550 cord is helpful like stated above. Once you're on a roof top and need some, you can lower it down and tie a bag full of water bottles, extra food, whatever and pull it up.

I don't know how big your county/city is you work in, but we do have a lay out of every school and apartment complex in the city. Not in my pack but in the office, so if you have time or someone could get that for the place you're in.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

My load out .rifle, drag bag containing binos , log book , range finder, pen , caribener, 550 cord, ear pro 60 rounds ammo half bonded for glass half hpbt and small camo net for covering rifle. Then in a separate back pack I carry some comfort and some essential equipment that contains water ,power bars , rain gear tripod with spotting scope and rifle rest HOG rest. Ir strobe, flashlight ,night vision SUN BLOCK ,bug spray, small first aid quick clot and torniquet camera.

Re: Sniper Pack and Epuipment

Het brother BTDT. Here is what I think will make life a bit easier for you
Pack you have

You need a shooting mat because it gets hot as all f on top roofs. I used an Eagle Drag Mat. Its the cheaper trifold version that holds rifle as a drag bag and folds out to be a mat. About a 140.00 with scope cover. Triad Tactical sells them

Binos, I like the little M22 military versions because you can pick up on Ebay or SH for around 100.00 and as good as it gets.

Spotter. I like the Leupold 12-40 MK4 with TMR

Laser Range Finder. I like the small Leica. I ahve a 1200 and a 1600. Both work great for your application. The better laser finders work far more often than the cheaper ones. Even at 100-300 yards the cheapies dont work well enough.

Poncho. get USGI. It will save your rump. Also get a liner

Get a Tripod with shooting adapter. I say spend the money and get the Hog Saddle. That thing will be your girlfriend it will get so much use. You wont know how good it is until you use it.

Rear bags for prone. I like the Redtack round bag and then get one of CJs bags that attaches to sling.

Get a pull through bore cleaner. Only use this to pull crap out of bore before a shot. Dont use to actually clean. This will roll up and store in rifle cheek pad pack. For the cheek pad I like Tacops one the best. Its a little larger.

Bipod. Most guys use the Harries but man the Atlas is better. I use a Long Range Accuracy Bipod but hard to get.

Get a pouch for food and water because it helps keep you sharp over the long hrs.

Get a pouch for person hygene. Wet wipes, tooth brush and paste. Also helps because first thing in AM nice to get bad taste out of mouth.

Toilet paper and wet wipes.

Shovel, small Gerber or Glock works well

Get a piece of camo netting to cover position in front for urban and over you for stationary place. Also helps keep climate at bay.

Two hats, boonie style. One with Ghillie laterial attached and one plain. You can get by with a ghillie hat for stalking, with small net.

Sling well I know a guy who makes them. Me. Seriously my company Tactical Intervention I prefer. Take a look at the Slip Cuff Quick Release. Available from Triad Tactical also. I think its great for LE work.
