hi guys,i wondering to get a 338 lapua magnum built and was wondering if it would be ok to use a 3006 chamber(long action)
to do so. (I'm talkin about remington 700.).
I heard that the 338 lm and 3006 chamber are the same exept for the bottom (magazine well),i also heard from some saying that the 3006 is a bit weaker.
Iwould appritiate an answer very much.
Btw.Not sure if chamber is the right word, but you'll probably understand.
Thanks

Re: build a rifle

Not worth the money you'd spend. Nothing would be compatible (bolt, follower/magazine, etc.)

For a 338LM you'de be better off buying a built rifle in that caliber or start with a custom action designed for the job.

My $0.02. YMMV

Re: build a rifle

The 30-06 and 338LM have very little in common dimensionally. Google the case dimensions and you'll see. Plus there have been a lot of discussions on the durability of the standard 700 action in regards to the 338LM. The bolt thrust figures and such that are way above my head.

There are a lot of other 338 rounds that would work and be a bit easier. 338 win mag and the like. But when you get into a round as pricey as 338LM you don't go cheap on the rifle.

Re: build a rifle

338-06 is really an awesome round, and easy to load for and brass is CHEAP. If you just want something in .338 go with the .338-06, even do an AI shoulder on it to eek a few more FPS out of it. It won't be the setup for a 150000000 yard eyeballer, but it would shoot very well and be adequate for most big game with the right load. Google it and forget a .338 LM off of a .30-06 700 receiver.

Re: build a rifle

I was playing with Berger's BC program.

The 338/06 should shoot 250s at 2600 fps. VLD 250 bullet shows a BC of .390 (G7).

If my "inputs" are correct, that means its super sonic to a mile.

At 1800 yards its only 192 fps slower the the 338 LM. (Assuming the 338/06 leaves at 2600 fps and the 338 LM leaves at 2900 fps) Got those numbers just brousing a Hornady Reloading Manual.

Now I don't shoot any 338s, but I believe if I was to build one, I think the 338/06 would be the way to go.

Sure seems it would be a lot cheaper to build and shoot then the 338 Lup. Mag. Bet that puppy would be one hell of an Elk Rifle.

What's the recoil difference between the two assuming the same weight rifle w/out a brake?

Re: build a rifle

If you truly want a 338lm sell the 06' and buy one. To mod yours will yield less than optimal results and take you right to the brink of a custom action.....and when you wish to trip it, a custom is easy to sell.....a 700 freaks quite a few out.

Re: build a rifle

I've shot a few 338/06 and I maintain in experience (albeit limited to some test fires) that it is a great cartridge, and on a budget (assuming it's an issue since the available action is to be used) it makes great sense.
No action alteration beyond what is desired, is necessary and the cartridge will perform without question for all reasonable purposes.
But it's no my action or wallet

Re: build a rifle

Order a magnum bolt face bolt from Pacific Tool and Gauge.

Chamber the gun in 338 Edge and go live your life wearing out the barrel. It's based on the 300RUM and about as easy as it gets.

Performance exceeds the 338LM on just about all fronts. This is according to shooters who spend time shooting, not in front of internet posts and/or ballistic programs.

Great cartridge that runs well in the 700 Remmy.

My two bits,

C.

Re: build a rifle

I still haven't measured one personally but aren't the feed rails on the ultra-mag actions going to be wider than standard the '06 and standard magnum actions?

In the op's situation, I think he'd be better off selling what he has and buying the action he needs/wants.

Not sure about Remingtons, but a fair number of 338 Edges have been built on "standard" Savage 110 actions that formerly were 270s, 30-06s, 7RMs and 300WMs.
