so i bought a remington 5r brand new today and i get it home and the bolt is very stiff in the shut position it slides very well but when locking it down its very hard and its hell to get opened i havnt even fired a round out of this rifle yet i tried remoil no help there any ideas what this could be ?

Re: remington 5r .308

try putting some grease on the lugs see if that helps. If not, there are a few other things to try, but I know the grease helped mine.

Re: remington 5r .308

Other than very little grease on the back of the lugs I would not mess with it. Shoot it an see how it does.

Is the bolt hard to open after the initial cocking or only after you dry fire it and have to recock the bolt?

Re: remington 5r .308

problem fixed the dude at the shop that i bought it at mounted the optic i am temporarily using for me and he is no mechanic thats for sure i used leupold mounts and rings well the front mout that screws to the rifle has two screws one that is longer than the other he had them backwards and it was bareley hitting the bolt i only opened it one time well forced it open so i did no damage to it but i switched the screws and all is perfect the action is now as smooth as glass.

i checked for any scratch marks or damage to the action and found none whatsoever so i guess i got lucky on this one

Re: remington 5r .308

Had the same problem on my M700 and through the forums I diagnosed the same problem. Sure made me feel better when I got it cycling smoothly!

Re: remington 5r .308

hell yea jethro i was pissed to say the least because i cycled the action before he mounted the scope and it was smooth so i sat it on the kitchen table and looked at it for like 45mins and started thinking of possibilities and i thought there is no way he did what i think he did and sure as shit he did i was happy as hell that i didnt just try n force it and cycle it any way i could and do damage to something i feel much better now because i almost lost it when the action wouldnt work when i stopped to show my old man who is a former army marksman MP and he kinda chuckled n said i didnt know they sold lemon guns with the name remington on em lol

Re: remington 5r .308

That is the exact reason I try to do every bit of gun work I can myself. At least when something is messed up I know its my fault.

P.S. Please start using punctuation, reading stuff without it makes my head hurt.

Re: remington 5r .308

well i look at it as a lesson learned and i will be doing the same from here on out. i dont know much but i know enough to get by on mounting optics, tear downs, and rebuilds.

sorry john for the lack of punctuation, ill work on it
