DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

I'm trying to decide on a second caliber for a DTA SRS. It's a 338 Lapua with a Nightforce 5.5 X 22 on it.
I want to be able to shoot targets and steel to 1000yds with reduced recoil, cost and barrel wear.
Of the caliber conversions available from DTA ( 243 Win, 6.5 x 47 Lapua, 260 Rem, 7mm WSM, 308 Win, 300 Win), I'm leaning towards the .260 Remington.
What do you guys think?
Anybody have a DTA SRS in 260?

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

The 260 would be hard to beat. 308 would be cheaper if you don't realistically plan on shooting to 1000 often.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

260 and 243 would be the two I would look at if its just paper punching at 1k and under. They both are going to be a lot cheaper to shoot, lower recoil and all around nice shooters. Just gotta decide which fits your want list better

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

If it were me an its not but I am going to get at least one 6.5 barrel for my DTAs. I am going with 6.5x47 shooting 123's and 139's. Being I just acquired a metallic silhouette rifle in the same caliber...it makes more sense that way too. But many will jump on the Creedmore as the answer or the 260. I just like what the 6.5x47 does with RL17. But as mentioned above the 243 is a nice cartridge too for punching paper.

If you don't reload...then the 260 all the way.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

I would go the 6.5 creedmoor. You can get match grade ammo for 24.00 box

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

I do reload.....was planning on using the 139's.....the 260 seemed to have a velocity edge on the 6.5x47.
How does the accuracy compare? Esp in the DTA?

I always hear that as a reason for the CM, but if I spent 24$ a box on ammo I be broke. Roll your own in whatever caliber and save the money for more barrels.

I chose the 7saum for my second barrel.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

i shoot my 308 to 1000 all day long, i also have the 260. both are great, its hard to beat a 308 for barrel life and ammo availability and if you don't think you can reach 1000 with a 308 you are mistaken. there are video's of frank hitting steel with his 18.5" 308 all day long, i shot my DTA to 1170 one day with awesome consistancy.

Where did you get the 7saum barrel?

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

BigJoe,
I know what you mean about the 308.
I was planning on a 22" 308 bbl when I bought the rifle.
Decided to hold off until I had the 338 dialed in

The best place besides DTA, Short Action Customs.

Joe, excellent point. I already posted this but it fit the discussion perfectly.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

i got a 7wsm directly from DTA, another very viable caliber. i think people are too fast to buy caliber entirely too capable for the distance they are planning. if your hunting large game then yeah shoot a big bullet, if your shooting paper and steel and your range only goes to 600 why the hell are you buying a 338 (not saying this is the case here but using it as a example). 308 is still a very viable caliber and should be what almost everyone should learn on, due to barrel life and easy accessability. i'm so sick of newbies coming on here asking about their first gun and being told some hotrod caliber, how about we help them learn to shoot a 308 and when their barrel burns out they can rebarrel in some hot shit caliber.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

I have a .260 SRS conversion and it is awesome.

I put together a 6.5 Creedmoor group buy and will have a couple extra barrels if you are interested in one.

Look at his posts he or she has been doing "nice" repeatedly everywhere
Not sure how this contributes to anything here
Nuff said

When you Roll your own for the first firing you will have more than $24 Box in twenty rounds.

The Creedmoor is a great option for DTA owners that do not reload. At $24 bucks a box, it is a great option for match quality ammo in a 6.5 caliber cartridge.

My first loading for the .260 with Lapua brass was more than $24 per box of 20, but subsequent loadings will be much cheaper.

Re: DTA 338 Lapua-complimentary caliber conversion????

I've shot 308 a lot, still have a couple of 308 semi's.
Built a 300 SAUM on a Rem 700, really like it, great performance, costs just a little more to shoot than 308.
I've had 2 338 Lapua's. Got interested in the cartridge first as a hunting round. One of my hunters in Alaska showed up with one in the mid nineties, never saw anything put down a big brown bear that fast.
I got to shoot Poundcake's DTA a couple of years ago, but I had a Rem MLR on order at the time.
Ordered the DTA mainly for the 338 Lapua, but of course I'd like to have a conversion barrel for cheaper practice.
Ideally I'd want a cartridge that mirrored the 338 Lapuas trajectory to 800-1000yds
was easy on the barrel and cheap to shoot.
Since that ain't gonna happen I wanted to see what you guys are using.
Thanks for the input, keep it coming

6.5X47, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .260 Rem will all be nearly identical in price with subsequent reloads.

Performance between the three 6.5 calibers is very similar. The 6.5 Creedmoor has an advantage if you want to shoot great match factory ammo for an affordable price.

If you roll your own, the .260 and 6.5X47 may have a slight advantage due to the availability of Lapua brass.
