I am building a new rifle in a Mauser Action. I would like to be able to shoot a 1000 yrds with it. I'm looking into a 308 NM, 358NM or a 375 Ruger. Anyone have any ideas on these rounds or any ideas on any other round that would fit in a Mauser action?

Re: Mauser Action Build

Mauser,

The 308 would work. I think the 358 and 375 would be larger than the caliber allowed at most matches if you plan on attending matches. My suggestions would be any of the .30-06 derivatives, 6.5 X 55 or 300 WM.

Welcome to the Hide,

No I don't believe a 300 win. mag would fit, I have mauser action and I'm building a 270 win. with it. But it sounds like a 30-06 might suit you better.

Re: Mauser Action Build

I was looking into a 308 Norma Mag and it looks like it just about matches the ballistics on a 300 win mag but I don't know how well it shoots out to 1000 yrds

Re: Mauser Action Build

That shouldn't be a problem the 308 can easily make it out to a grand. How well it shoots depends on how well you build it.

Re: Mauser Action Build

I built a 338 win mag out of a vz 24. The magazine length had to be stretched and the bolt face had to be turned. IMHO the 90 degree bolt lock is the deal braker for me to use a large ring mauser for competition. It's slower and the bolt handle has to be just right for optics. Can be done, Mausers are great rifles.

Re: Mauser Action Build

Mauser34, I am not trying to rain on your parade, but this topic comes up a good bit. If you are not careful, you will have the cost of a good Remington/Savage/Winchester bolt gun in your Mauser and the results may be less than spectacular. You may have a reason for using the Mauser action(you already have it, want a DIY project, etc.), I don't know. I have several Mausers and have had a pantload more. I like them and 1903's, but for a serious longrange rifle, I like my Remingtons and Winchesters.

If you are going ahead with the project, check out IT&D in Minerva, Ohio. Dave Carver will do an excellent job of chambering your rifle and also does the bolt bending, magazine opening, etc.

Good luck whatever course you choose.

PM BigJoe. He built a Benchmark Barrels 260 on a mauser. He has pics posted up all over this site of it...
