I have always been curious on what bipod I should choose for my heavier rifles. I see a lot of people who have bipods that cost several hundred dollars, and yet more commonly I see many people with different variations of Harris' bipods.

I have a .308 in an AICS and I was just wondering if I should invest in a AI bipod or will a Harris work just fine?

You just have to try a few. It's a personal thing. My top choice is the SAKO bipod. When I switched to Atlas, I didn't think it was "all that"...until I tried a Harris again.

What is it about bipods that makes one so much better or worse than another? I come from a place of ignorance here, so please be patient with me. Do some absorb recoil impulse better than others to not have the rifle "jump" when the shot breaks (that's what I'm experiencing with my Caldwell). Is it materials? Features seem very similar. I would imagine it's also about build quality and where and how it's manufactured?

As mentioned, try a few if the opportunity presents itself. Harris, AI, and Atlas will all get the job done. I happen to like the feature set and build quality of the Atlas.

Yea, I haven't really heard negative things about any of the bipods listed (Harris, AI, Atlas), I just wondered why some people are willing to pay $300 as opposed to $80 if they "do the same thing".

Have always used Harris and like the BRM-S with Pod Loc. Haven't found anything else that gives me anything else I need in a bipod. The Harris deploys quick and holds solid and the I like the flat bottom when its legs are up to set on barricades. It's very stable.

I have 2 Harris BRM models. These are the ones made for bench rest shooting and do not swivel. Unfortunately, out of the bag, neither will hold the rifle level on a bench. They are very "lop sided" and I have to put something under one of the legs to get level. To me, this is very dissappointing for a product that is supposed to be superior to the $40 job at Wal-mart or Academy. I have had several other "very experienced" shooters have a look at them and we all agree that the bipods are simply not alligned properly.

^and to go along with that, a swivel model would fix this problem but at the time of purchase, I didn't want the swivel models.

Mainly, it's a comfort thing. I find shooting and welding to be quute similar. When I'm comfortable, and feel "right", I can weld beautifully. When I don't feel just right, I do ok. Same with my marksmanship.

When I lean into the rifle a bit, I prefer the rifle to "give" a little. For me, that allos me to settle in, get comfortable, and get stable. When set up this way, I can spot my own hits at 50 yards, with an unbraked 308. I can do the same with a Harris equipped with claws, but I have to REALLY lean into it hard. Sometimes I can dig tge standard harris feet into the dirt a but and get it loaded well, but off of a hard surface, I'm worthless with a harris.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll try to find someone with a high dollar bipod I can try to see if it makes a difference for me.

I have a Harris (swivel model) bipod on my AICS 2.0. I find no reason to switch to another. It does the job perfectly for a fraction of the price other once cost. Drop some more money on good glass or a good barrel, I believe that is more important.

Yea it seems like the general consensus has been that the Harris will do everything you need it to but if you feel like spending money than you can get an Atlas, Parker-hale, or AICS bipod.

Get an altas with a spigot mount and you will be happy.

I have Harris & Atlas bipods. I've used GG&G bipods and other brands too.

For a lighter weight rig, I like Harris because the deploy quickly as well.

Overall, my favorite bipod are Atlas. They allow me to get lower than Haris bipods in prone, and are very sturdy.

The way I look at this is the following; a friend and I have the same rifle setups. The only difference is that he has a Atlas V8 with the spigot mount and all the 9 yards and I have a Harris swiveling bipod that I purchased here off the hide for 50$. Guess what, he doesnt shoot any better, and I saved 250$ and invested that on a Eberlestock pack. thats my .2c on that.

I have the Atlas BT10 with the QD ARMS mount and have used a couple different Harris bipods. I prefer the Atlas by a large margin. I use it on a couple different rifles, it has pan and rotate features (for shooting on tilted ground or bench), much easier to load especially in the 45 degree setting. Always just my opinion but it is one of my favorite "toys." Cheers...

i've used many bipods and they all worked for me, so at that point i go for looks my 2 favorites are the Atlas/spigot combo and for my .22's i use the CAA
