Anyone know the formula used to calculate max ord as well as at what range the max ord will be at.

Re: How to calculate max ord?

Personally I would use Patagonia Software Loadbase 3.0 (soon to be ColdBore) He has that feature in both the desktop and mobile versions. He also have a very good loophole dialog in the same software. His is pretty robust and includes all of these features. FFS might include it too, I don't recall. (I don't' have the screen shot of the Max Ord Feature but it is in there)

Example of Loophole section to give you an idea of the feature set.

You can make a basic card at JBM using the round you figure you'll use then look at the drop, that column is in inches, so then it becomes pretty simple.

Since the software is running the numbers, it has to be using a formula so technically if you had access to the developer you can get the actual formula, run it long hand from there. But since 99% of the software will give you a range card with columns, you can just pull it from the inches in drop column. Beats running multiple step formulas on the fly.

I like using the multiple wind feature to account for Max Ord differences in wind drift myself. I give the mid range wind more value and let it do the work.

In this day and age, the long hand math is really outdated, and is a slow error prone way of doing business. Most of the software is accurate and robust enough to give you more detail then you'll ever need at your finger tips.

Re: How to calculate max ord?

Computing the Ordinates to Trajectory

Y=X/1000*(Ar-Ax)

Y = height of desired ordinate in yards
X = horizontl distance to desired ordinate
Ar= Angle of departure in mils for trijectory being computed
Ax = Anangle of departure in mils for the range of X

Example you want the 1000 yard ordinate of a 2000 yard drajectory

Ar = 44.5 mils
Ax = 11.1 mil

1000/1000 X (44.5 - 11.1) = 33.4 yards ( using Mil = 3.375 Minutes)

Another method/example: Determine the 800 yard ordinate of a 1200 yard trajectory

Ar for 1200 = 19.9 mil
Ax for 800 - 9.4 mils
Value of ordinate = 10.5 mils

800 X 10.5 /1000 = 8.4 yards

Re: How to calculate max ord?

Quick Formula:

Bullets maximum ordinate is approx.(half way to target + 10%)
ex. 800 yd target MO is 440 yds or (3.4 mil elev. from your rng card)

Re: How to calculate max ord?

Thanks for the replies Guys, I know that their are programs out there that do this for you but I wanna know how those numbers come about.

I know what you mean. I spent too much time in the jungles and arctic to trust batteries.

I've never had a pencil fail me regardless of conditions.
