i'm lookin for good recipe for my 700 in 8mm mauser. i purchased some 220gr sierra's, but upon doin some research i'm thinking i bought a little heavy. i figured there is only one site to give me some good info...and here i am.. thanks for sharing your knowledge

Re: 8x57 data?

Intended use?
I'm running pretty much only 200's but have worked up 175's for hunting as well

Re: 8x57 data?

The trick is getting velocity up to making the 220s perform. 200/175 is usually the ticket for making the bullet do it's job for hunting applications.
I have an ancient box of 150 Sierras I have been wanting to try but haven't had the time.
BLC-2 did ok in mine, but I'm thinking preferrable results were with 4350.

Re: 8x57 data?

Why are American 8x57mm published load data such garbage?

A) The 8x57mm case head is patterned after the 1889 7.65x53mm cartridge. When built with large Boxer primer pockets is good for 67,000 psi handloads for an individual rifle with long brass life [primer pockets do not get loose quickly].
The SAAMI registered pressure for the 8x57mm is 35,000 psi or 37,000 c.u.p.

B) Likewise the 6mmRem and 270Win are patterned after the 1889 7.65x53mm cartridge. When built with large Boxer primer pockets is good for 67,000 psi handloads for an individual rifle with long brass life [primer pockets do not get loose quickly].
The SAAMI registered pressure for the 6mmRem and 270Win are 65,000 psi.

C) How did the 8x57mm ever get registered at SAAMI with such low pressures?
The answer is confusion between the 1888 pattern .318" bullet and the 1905 pattern .323" bullet intended for the 1898 Mauser rifle.
Bullet diameter 8.08 mm / .318 (I and IR) and 8.20 / .323" (IS and IRS)

This ammo has 0.319" bullets in Remington's effort to split the difference.

Is the 220 gr Sierra only for 8mmRemMag rifles?

I got a 1903-1905 Turkish Mauser for $50 from BIG5 in 2004.
I shortened and recrowned the barrel at 27.5":

A) With 47 gr bulk IMR4895 [acts like H322] and 200 gr Sierra Match King I got a 1" 5 shot group at 100 meters with these velocities with that load: 2618, 2633, 2649, 2623, 2650, 2626, 2638 fps.

B) 48 gr. bulk IMR4895 220 gr. Sierra 2420, 3.22", measured
2600 - 2625 fps 1.1" 5 shot group @50 yards No extractor groove growth.

The velocities from my 8x57mm with the 220 gr bullet are what would be 180 yards from the muzzle of an 8mmRemMag.
Any internet braggart with an 8mmRemMag is killing bull elk at 800 yards, so make sure you are within 620 yards of the bull elk with your 8x57mm rifle and that bullet:)

Re: 8x57 data?

The reason that most published data is low pressure is due to Mausers that have a .318 bore rather than a .323. Stuff a .323 bullet in there and try to push it hard...KABOOM.

This is the problem that a buddy of mine is dealing with. He is starting to hand load for it and had trouble finding data for the correct .323 bullet and bore.

Plus, we aren't really sure what to look for as far as pressure signs. It doesn't have a sprung ejector.

Re: 8x57 data?

intent..500 yard paper punching. it's a douglas #8 1-10. thanks for the imput.. 220's for a magnum makes perfect sense, i must have had a brain fart when i purchased them, thanks again

Re: 8x57 data?

Thinking about trying out the prvi 198's in my k98. Figure if not happy not out all that much

Re: 8x57 data?

When I had my custom barreled 8x57, I ran 51gr IMR 4350 with 200gr HPBT Sierra. 26" barrel an it ran 2650fps. Plenty fast.

Re: 8x57 data?

this is all good starting info, thanks. 200gr hpbt's are not fun to try and locate.. my search will continue. thanks again

Check VihtaVuori.com
I've been using N-150 with the 220gr Sierra Game King in my 8x57mm and no complaints. They have 5 different powders listed for that bullet.
