Hornady answered my thoughts and prayers and brought out the 6mm Creedmoor, of course now Id like to build a new tactical rifle around this wonderful cartridge. So do I rebarrel one of my 700s or start from scratch going with a Pierce 700 clone receiver, a fine barrel from GAP or Bartlein, H-S Precision stock, etc, etc? Give me your thoughts w/o breaking my bank. Actually, I dont see any other way of doing it besides the latter.

Re: 6mm Creedmoor build?

I believe the 6 creed was designed for AR guns, a little shorter, for bolts just use 243 win or something a little longer, maybe 6.5 rsaum.......

Re: 6mm Creedmoor build?

GAP developed the round for the gas guns but it does perform very well in a bolt gun as you can tend to get more velocity and longer barrels.

Hornady only made brass for the round AFTER GAP talked them into it after a 110,000 piece order.

GAP uses Bartlein Barrels.... they dont make their own barrels.

The 6 Creedmoor will outshine the 243 in barrel life (barely) and it doesnt take quit as much powder to attain the speeds a 243 does, so its a little more efficient.

Ky, what kind of speed are you getting with 105's and 115

Barrel length also.

JG,

I've been running a 243 bolt for several months, and have been eyeballing the 6 creed for almost the same amount of time for several reasons--

I push a 243 105 hornady bthp with only 41.6gr of 4350, there's still a ton of case capacity--

What I have been able to gather from our smiths and George: I should have slightly better consistency as I get closer to the 100% capacity mark in a case..

6mm creedmoor is a great idea for guys that want to run the high bc heavy/long 243 bullets in the ar magazine, it might also see some nice functionality in a bolt rifle where folks are not pushing to max case capacity.

That said: I'm sticking with my 243 in bolt because I have no idea how accuracy could get any better or more consistent.

Re: 6mm Creedmoor build?

The 6 Creed is really close ballistically to the 6XC, with the Creed having a slightly larger case volume.

One nice feature of both cartridges is being able to seat well under mag length without putting long, high bc bullets below the neck/shoulder junction and down into the powder. Plus, the sharper shoulder on the 6 Creed means less trimming and longer case life....

The .243 may muster up a little more velocity, but not much.

I have 2700 rounds through my XC barrel and it's still shooting. When it's time for a new tube, it's going to GAP for a new barrel in 6 Creed.

Re: 6mm Creedmoor build?

I have both a 6XC and 6 Creedmoor. I enjoy them both so I am not going to sit here and nit pick which one shoots the best. You really need to boil it down to ammo component selections and AVAILABILITY of those components.

I to am using a 6mmRem in my bolt gun with the same 105 HPBT, if I can get that bullet to shoot really good I wont be doing the 6 Creed, though id like to just because I can and dont mind another little project. Once I got some 95VLDs dialed in a few years ago it was shooting in the mid 3s @100yds, hopefully the 105 Hornadys will do the same. What are you getting for accuracy in your 243?
