It works dandy. You might get a wee bit of shift, but we always confirm zero anyway. I'm not shifting scopes often, rather only for a given purpose where it would stay on the whole time it's in use for that intended purpose. A 5.5x22 for a dedicated varmint hunt verses a 2.5x10 for deer and general usage rig. I'm a nasty civilian now, so that's no big deal.
That begs the question of whether a soldier in combat would want to pull his big scope off to use an aimpoint for example while patrolling and then expect to put the scope back on once he is static on a support position and expect to get first round hits at 1,0000 yards without reconfirming zero. Probably would not be optimal, but even then the shift would probably only be 1/2 MOA at most, so you could easily adjust followup shots if multiple shots were going to occur in a prolonged engagement in a support role.
