I may have an opportunity to pick up an HK94 that was part of the CA DOJ release some years back. I'm not much of an HK expert so I figured I'd ask here.

What should I know about these? What questions should I be asking about it?

Value? I see several HK94 rifles on the completed auction search at GB, many of them say specifically that they are NOT old CA DOJ rifles (not sure if being old DOJ is good or bad). But since nothing comparible has sold recently, I only know asking prices and not selling prices. Obviously asking price on a rifle that does not sell is not the best measurement of its value. I know I'm asking for an opinion, but that's all I can go by at this point.

Thanks for any help you can give.

These sold for ~$2000-$2500 when they were released. Some of them had numbers marked in the sides and were a bit on the rough side. Others were fairly clean and showed few signs of use.

The main thing I would say is what do you want to do with this and what are you expecting? Most of the guys buying these back then were sending them off and having paddle mags installed and getting the guns remarked and refinished so the wear was not a big deal. That and using them as sear hosts and either cutting down or rebarreling them.

They are great. Work flawlessly, fun to shoot, what is not to love. I like HK's. That being said the 9mm has been replaced. You can get yourself a nice light AR that will fill the same needs with a far better round. It is said that a 5.56 will penetrate less sheetrock than a 9mm. Not sure I can believe it but I am sure someone else will chime in.
They are good as gold when it comes to collector value though.
