I know there is no such thing as a best or most or whatever, but I'm about to replace my 10/22 barrel and add a McMillan stock and looking for input.

I plan to thread it for suppressor as well.

Thanks!

Kidd or Green Mountain. I put a Kidd barrel on my OG 10/22 and the thing shoots lights out!

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

If money is no issue and you just want top quality I recommend a Lilja or a Hart drop in barrel. In the midrange price area I think the Kidd is a winner and at the lowest price value barrel I would pick the Green Mountain. I own or have owned all of these drop in rimfire barrels except for the Kidd so I have experience with most of them. Going forward I will probably buy a Kidd next. I don't think I would buy a GM again. Certainly better than a stock barrel, but I just did not like the look/finish compared to the others. For a replacement profile sporter barrel I also own a ER Shaw. It looks better than the GM but for value the GM beats a Shaw.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I have consistently had the best service from my 10/22 rifles with Shilen barrels. I prefer the 20", 0.920 diameter, 1:16 twist, Bentz-chamber barrels. I have run everything from the best match-grade stuff to bulk plinking ammo and it has eaten everything without a hiccup and is just scary accurate with match ammo (I shoot a LOT of Wolf MT, but it works well with most match ammo I have tried...all weighed/sorted).

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Thanks for the input!

Follow up question - How much accuracy difference should I see between Lilja/Shilen vs Kidd?

Thanks again!

Good link, thanks.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

KID barrels are made on Lothar Walther rifled blanks. I don't think they are a compromise at all.

Typical 100 yard, 10-shot groups with Wolf Match Extra:

My KID barreled 10/22 shoots as well as my Lilja barreled Sako Quad.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Kidd all the way for your 10/22.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

There was a post a couple weeks ago about Green Mountain running a sale. I bought one for build I have in mind but haven't gotten all my parts together yet.

Edit: Haven't found the post but IIRC they were marked down to around $89.00.

Edit again: Looks like it might have been a Christmas sale, http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2235827

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Here's my Kidd Super Grade in a McMillan STC stock. In my opinion, it is about as accurate as you can get in a semi auto. I shoot rimfire bechrest against a bunch of Win. 52s, 40X, Anshutz and Kimber bolt guns and some of them are more accurate and consistent.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I have had ER shaw, green mountain, and Butler creek and the most accurate out of the ones I have had was the butler creek 20in match chamber one.But I do have a Kidd trigger on my 10/22 that I converted to 17hm2 and if their barrels are as good as their triggers I would say they are great!

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I was very happy with my Green Mountain. The price is good as well.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Lilja, Kidd, Shilen or GM. just depends on what kind of money you want to spend.
You get what you pay for. That said, you can sometimes get lucky and get a lower cost barrel and it shoot as well as the top end barrels, but you never know.

After you get a barrel start saving for a KIDD trigger. they are worth the $$$. Nothing I've tried even comes close and I've tried a lot of them.

Sorry, GM does NOT belong in that sentence.
Some shoot great, others, not so much. They have had well documented QC issues.

For the money, KID barrels (based, like Clark and Volquartsen, on Lothar Walther blanks) are hard to beat, particularly on sale. Sometimes $160-175. Even at $200, I'm not sure how Tony does it.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I ordered a Kid barrel (18 inch non fluted threaded with thread protector) on Tuesday and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I already have a Kid 2 stage and a boyds tacticool stock. I ordered their bolt buffer, charging handle, guide rod and spring...along with a hat 'cause you gotta represent...and I believe that the total with standard shipping was a little less than $300.00

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I am aware of the GM QC issues, but you can take a chance on a cheap one like I did.
I bought one a few years back for something like $89(SS fluted) on sale at Midway. Cut it back to 14" and put it on a Charger pistol. It shoots as well as the last Kidd barrel I bought.
I guess I just got lucky.

Usually you do get what you pay for though.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I see ER shaw isn't mentioned...no real suprise iv'e gone through some of the good barrels, never a kidd.

The ER shaw i have must be a fluke or something. i know they are cheaper barrels but mine shoots lights out. Im thinking of going to a KIDD but im really not sure I could get that much better accuracy out of it. shoots as good as my brother lija barreled 541T, no lie.

I'm really going to focus on the next still day at the range and see what its capable of but i'll report back on that.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Another #1 for Kidd..some of my older Green Mtn barrels and reworked stock barrels will come close...20" target barrels were 170$ last I looked.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I wanted to get a Fajen thumbhole sporter stock and it ended up being cheaper to buy the combo that came with the Adams & Bennett barrel.

Initially I planned on putting either a Kidd of Volquartsen tension barrel on it, but after running the Adams & Bennett barrel (aka Green Mountain), I didn't see a need to change it out.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

My wife has an adams and bennet barrel and it ALWAYS shoots. The barrel and stock were sold together and cost about $400 6 years ago. Not sure what they cost now. It will shoot into one ragged hole at 50 yards and will pick off shotgun shells at will at 100 yards.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I have a lilja and love it, but if I was going to do it all again I would go Kidd (with supergrade receiver).

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

i consistantly get 1.5" groups off a bi-pod no bags @100yds with my green mountain and i know i have alot to work on with my shooting

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I took my 10/22 and Cz452V out today for some shooting

Shot them both with Federal bulk pack (for shits and giggles) SK Standard plus, SK match, and Eley Match.

Out of the 3 nice ammos the SK standard plus shot best in both guns. I dont know why but the eley and the SK match both had inconsistent velocity spreads through the chrono and shot noticeably poorer.

The SK plus had an extreme spread with ten shot groups around 25fps and SD of about 7-8 the SK match had an ES of almost 60 and the eley was right behind it. Im not sure if these were bad batches but they just didnt shoot well.

Anyway my 10/22 with the ER shaw barrel shot .850 center to center at 75m. and my CZ452 shot .6 center to center. Both were 10 shot groups.

My CZ has a 1.5lb trigger weight and was outfitted with a leupold 3-10 mk4 m3. The 10/22 has a 4-16 pst which is a bit washed out and breaks at almost 5 pounds. Im switching triggers on the 10/22 to a kidd trigger and i will be switching out the PST. I think those are two limiting factors. If i can get it to shoot like the CZ I might sell the CZ as I hunt and really like follow up shots which are very hard with a bolt gun.

Anyway... thats an ER shaw barrel not bad at 75 meters.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I have had good luck with Volquartsen

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

oh also... im trying to hunt down CZ performance with the 10/22, placed an order for a kidd barrel and 8oz. 2 stage trigger... hopefully along with better optics this will be the ticket.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

installed my Kidd trigger and barrel today... The barrel was extremely tight going into the receiver. But hopefully if the range report goes well it wont need to come out anytime soon.

I went with the 8oz/8oz trigger and it feels just right for me, almost a hair on the light side. I'm sure for my finger and brain this is as light as I can safely go while consciously knowing when my trigger will break. I dont think I'll ever have the finesse of a benchrest shooter.

I also recommend the flat trigger, much easier to feel the creep and break in my opinion.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

That looks pretty hot. I always wanted a Kidd Trigger- I bought the T-2000 weeks before the Kidd came out and my T2000 overtravel screw was siezed from the factory. Total crap on Volquartsen's part.

When I called they didn't offer any help so I'm going to have to install my own overtravel screw soon to fix the problem. (I know it's taken years to get to it, but I don't shoot the pocket rifle much).

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

The new Primary Weapons Systems carbon fiber wrapped barrels are pretty darn accurate as well . My Daughter test fired a bunch of them for PWS when they were testing them and they were all hammers . The one she got in return for all her hard work will run with Volquartzens no problem . 10 shot groups at 50 yards run under a half inch in her 13 year old hands using SK Standard ammo .

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

I've built a lot of those rifles and have tried most of the lower end barrels including Green Mountain, Shaw and some others. The Lilja's, Kidd and similar barrels are way out of my price range!

I absolutely refuse to buy match ammo so that may have a bearing on my opinion but I can't see a dime's worth of difference in any of the barrels. The biggest gain was going from a standard to a bull (.920") barrel.

I do NOT float the barrels. The receiver is just too weak on the 10-22 to support the weight of the barrel.

Maybe some day I'll get some match ammo and test the barrels for accuracy but until then, any of the lower end barrels suit me just nine!

A word of caution......None of the Bentz chambered barrels will clear an UNFIRED round well. They all have caution statements engraved on the barrels stating that. Be advised that they ARE NOT KIDDING!

If a cease fire is called at the range, you attempt to eject an unfired round to clear the rifle, the round may still stay in the chamber. Either LOOK every time you eject a live round or actually fire it to clear the rifle chamber.

Re: Most consistently accurate 10/22 barrel?

Flash, I am interested in your findings. does ammo vary alot among cheaper types. what was typical for you with bull bbls?
