Reloading .270?

I want to reload .270 ammo. I have Sierra 130GR Spitzer Boat Tail, what would be a good powder to use and why?

Re: Reloading .270?

I would use H4831SC powder with 130gr bullet and around 59-60grs. max load. H4831sc is not temp sensitive, provides good speed around 3000-3050 with 22" barrel. Just plain works well with the 270 win.

Re: Reloading .270?

I'm thinking about IMR 4831. What is the difference between magnum primers and standard?

Re: Reloading .270?

I actually use R-17 with the lighter 270 bullets, I have a load with R-17 and 130gr. Hornady GMX that gives me great velocity and accuracy.

Re: Reloading .270?

I hear people suggest Mag primers too. What differences have you seen using Mag primers? Does that help with SD or ES in colder weather?

Re: Reloading .270?

My go to load for hunting is:

Winchester brass
60.0 gr. of H4831SC
CCI BR2 primer
130 gr. Barnes T-TSX

Velocity is right at 3,000 fps out of a 22" barrel.

*All of my reloading manuals list this as a max compressed load and although I do not experience any pressure signs, you should start 5-10% below this and work up your charge from there.

I have heard good things about the 4350's and Reloader 22 as well.

Re: Reloading .270?

I keep my OAL to the books, 3.250 inches, works just fine that way. I'm loading 130gr. GMX's with 56gr. of RE-17 at 3200fps, RE-17 works well in the .270

Re: Reloading .270?

Thanks rusty, ill give that a try. was thinking of picking up .270 dies to add to the stack.
