OK, to start with, I can't presently get one in my state, but I'm hoping to have an address in a free state eventually. I'd like to mount a suppressor on my 22" barreled M1A. My two priorites would be effectiveness of the suppressor and accuracy at distance. Weight and price are secondary. Can anyone give me any advice on which ones would be best suited to my parameters? I've been looking at the offerings from Gemtech, Surefire, AAC, and YHM, Are there any others that I should be considering?

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

if you can avoid mag dumps then a titanium can is the way to go. tbac or sas. if you like pulling the trigger, a lot, and aren't super concerned with poi shift then stainless is the way to go. open field there. probably going aac or surefire.

you didnt specify if you wanted a qd setup or thread on.

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

Yes, I'd like to have a QD mount. I see that Surfire and Gemtech offer a direct thread on FH with QD capability. I've already picked up the one that YHM sells. I'm not sure if AAC offers one of them. I'd also like to hear opinions on which
quick mount is the best design.

Although I agree that QD is usually less accurate than thread on, I have had very suprising results with my AAC SDN-6 on my R700. My groups at 100 yards have not changed and the rifle holds a great 200 yard zero. I do have POI shift though but I don't mind because I have zeroed the rifle with the can and do not intend to shoot unsuppressed.

It's hard to suppress the M1A effectively-one of it's limitations.....

The barrel is too thin. But good luck trying.

Agree

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

I've ordered a heavy barrel, but would have to agree that the barrel OD from the gas cylinder forward looks like an AR pencil barrel.
I'm not expecting bolt gun accuracy, but have seen many photos of them being used suppressed by the military. I can understand where the QD mount might not be the best setup for accuracy, but is any one design generally considered superior in that respect to the others?

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

You may want to contact Smith Enterprises in AZ as they probably have the most knowledge suppressing this platform. They actually make suppressors that quick-attach right over their own flash hider. FYI, they ain't cheap. Again, good luck.....

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

One of the limitations with the M1A is the odd thread pitch of the barrel. The thin barrel is another.

Here are apparently two options:

This test was conducted I believe by Robert Silvers of AAC:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
M1A: Factory Flash Hider, 168.2 dB

AAC 762SD, 138.3 dB, +.8 dB FRP, 29.9 dB NSR
Surefire FA762K, 140.7 dB - +4.5 dB FRP, 27.5 dB NSR </div></div>

I'd say both of those provided acceptable performance. The 145.2DB FRP on the Surefire was the only round that would likely be perceived as loud.

The Fischer cans average ~144DB so they are nearly that loud for every round.

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

I recommend you also look at the HTG suppressors. They are in Boise Idaho and have both stainless and titanium in .308. Plus you can take them apart and clean them as needed.

Re: best suppressor for 7.62 NATO

Thanks to all that posted. I hadn't realized that AAC was offering a direct thread on flash hider that would mount a suppressoer to the M1A barrel, I see now that they do. I also had not considered SEI, I know they specialize in the M1A's for the military, although I have not heard much about the performance of their suppressors. I plan to check out HTG. I had not heard of them before. I've also just heard about Suppressed armament systems, I plan to check them out as well.

The best one is the one you can afford. But thunderbeat, gem tech, cyclone are the the shit. If those cans would be women they would have perfect boob to ass ratio and theynwould know and stick to he three F rule. Feed me, fuck me , and shut the fuck up.

I have to respectfully disagree here, a suppressor is basically a purchase for life, that said, buying the first one you can afford may leave you wishing for more years later. Find what you want and save up for it. Otherwise you'll likely end up spending ALL the cash over again getting the can you really wanted.

Everyman's ratio is different. I like my asses a little more "bubbly" for instance....
