Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

I have a Rem 5R 24" in a W3 chassis and it shoots really good 3/4" all day long, 7 hits out of 10 on a 21X15" plate at a 1000 yards 5-10 MPH wind.

8" plate at 565 yards = boring hit, hit, hit...

Been thinking of getting a OBR how did it compare to your 5R at 1000?

My main concern is it's 1000 yard performance.

Any pros or cons to the OBR would be great.

I reload how is the brass?

Should I go with the 20"?

How does it run with a can? gassy?

I'm a one gun kinda guy...if you could only have one to shoot to 1000 which would you keep?

thanks

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

I can't make any recommendations or comments as I have a 18" OBR on order, delivery expected in August timeframe. can only say that some folks don't like the XTRAXN feature on the new OBR's as it appears to cause the brass to take on a light swirl pattern due to what seems like fluting markings, though from what i've seen appears to be very small. i don't reload but plan on it given the overall price of rounds and quality control. this will be my first AR platform and i'm looking at either Gemtech or Thunder Beast QD can and for optics either the ACOG or US Optics

Bold and zesty comment here... But I would compare my GAP crusader to my OBR. I do not have the fluted chamber and the brass is reloadable (currently on my 4x Lupua brass with no major issues).

My TBAC 30-BA is enroute.

Only one gun? That's just plain heresy...

I have shot an 18" OBR out to ~1140 yds. The hits were fairly routine. Another shooter in that same class was shooting a 16" OBR to that same distance and scoring hits with regularity as well. Granted, I had the benefit of extremely good wind calls from the instructor, but the point is that the rifle was capable.

I now own an 18" OBR and like it better everytime I shoot it. For me, it took a bit of getting used to, but it'll hold 1/2 MOA out to 800-ish. I haven't had this one out past that distance yet.

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

I have an 18 inch OBR and as stated above love it more everytime I shoot it. It is def. not the same as shooting the 5R I had and sold about a year ago. In my mind the OBR is on a dif. level. Don't get me wrong.... The 5R was nice just not as nice as the OBR. My OBR came with a .529 test target with 168 FGMM and will do half moa all day. It does take some getting used to when you have been shooting a bolt gun. However, once you get dialed in you are good to go. I would go OBR and not look back. I have and couldn't be happier. I am waiting for the new silincerco 7.62 can to come out so I don't have a can for it yet.

All best brother

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

I have a rem 5r and it does shoot great, have had my eye on an OBR for a while though. A guy I shoot with some has an OBR that he does competitions with in our area. He runs a can on it, not sure which, but said it works flawlessly. He is part of swat team in nearby town, said they put them through their paces during range time and no problems even with high round count and running the can. Have heard the same from a vendor right after the larue range day this year, said they put several thousand rounds through one with the can, greased partway through day and never had in malfunctions. Larue makes fantastic gear, how could they not? They are from Texas!!!

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

The OBR is a very accurate and reliable .308 gas gun, it is very well made and backed by a great company.

I think it really comes down to what you want to shoot. They should both be .50-.75 guns within the limits of the cartridge.

I prefer gas guns, but what's right for me might not be what works for you.

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

My 18 in. OBR is incredible and at 1000 yd with 175 smk is about the max. I would not consider it to be a real 1000 yd rifle but in an autoloader it will hold it's own. Have a Les Baer that is just a bit more more accurate but the OBR is better all around in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

Why is your main concern "1000 yard performance" ?

Why not the rifle that's the most consistent all around? Just curious...

For me personally, I've shot an EMC, and my MWS to 550, and after that, I go to the bolt gun...

I have a safe of weapons that will shoot to 700-800 yards...the 24" Rem 5r is the only rifle that I have that will hit at 1000 yards consistently. I want to replace it with the OBR (if it will be accurate at 1000 with the shorter barrel.)

1000 yards is the max of my local range..I would hate to sale my 5R to fund a OBR and not have a 1000 yard gun.

I just shot a DM comp where day 1 was 100-500 yds and day 2 included shots out to 850 yds. On day one, I would say 50% of the field were using semi-auto guns and on day two it was 95% using bolt guns. I would say unless you are trying to solve a speed issue in a comp, stick with your trusty 5R. Confidence in a gun is a priceless quality.

Re: Anybody owned a Rem 5R and a Larue OBR .308?

I run an 18" obr and it is plenty accurate.

What you give up going with the shorter gas operated gun is velocity. My obr gets right at 2500fps with 43.5 gr of varget under a 168 gr amax bullet. And while the accuracy is there the wind call and range estimation must be spot on or else you will have plenty of misses at 1k. The extra couple hundred fps you get out of a longer bolt gun pay dividends at range.

Now with all that said, I love my obr and have no plans for a precision bolt gun. Just a couple of months ago I was banging a 10" steel gong with about 80% hits at 890 yards in a switching wind. And I'm no great shooter.

Inside of 800 the obr is phenomenal.

Edit- wow, didn't realize how old this thread was.........

Hope that helps.
