i am going to have a new rifle built within the next year or so. im getting all of the parts together. it will be a range rifle. i like the .338 lapua, .338 RUM, and the .338-378. Which of these would yall choose and why for ELR shooting? Or any other calibers suggested?

Re: New rifle build, cant decide what caliber

338 lapua for me. Best brass, pretty readily available and all in all a tough round to beat if you don't mind the cost associated with shooting a round of that size.

Contact Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge about a .338 Lapua Magnum Shehane Reamer. You won't regret making the call.

If its only for punching paper, I think there are some other calibers you should definitely consider. What exactly do you want to do? Just shoot paper out to 1000yds? For example, I would consider the following as well. Much less recoil than what you are currently looking at, and probably more accurate as well..all things being equal.

7WSM
6.5x284
6mmBR
6.5x47
270
260
300winmag

.300 WM chambered for 240 SMKs with a 1-8 twist barrel.

Predator Custom does a rifle based off that load that shoots lights out. Look at the ballistics of a .240 SMK doing 2900 FPS. Its a poor mans Lapua.....its stays neck and neck with the .338 until around 1500 yards.

The best part is it runs on standard Winchester brass.....the ammo is 1/3 to load VS .338 LP.

If it's really just for paper, I think the 260 would get the win for cost/recoil/performance. If it might be used for hunting or beyond 1400yds, then +1 to Lofty's suggestion.

Re: New rifle build, cant decide what caliber

Yeah, I'm also needing some more background info. What experience do you have and what ranges are you going to be shooting. The 338 is generally 3-5 bucks a shot depending how your load development is. The 6.5CM is an excellent round out to 1k and a little more as will the 260ai, 6x47, 6.5x284 but watch for your barrel life too. Do you have a range to get the full potential out of the 338? You can do a search on just about every cartridge on here and find a ton of good reading. Ask yourself what you NEED and not just what you WANT. Hope that little bit helps.

7mm WSM will match a 338 Lapua's trajectory out to 1000 yards, at a fraction of the cost and recoil. If you don't need the downrange energy, take a look that the 7mm mags.
