Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I have been quite happy with my Bushnell Elite 1600 Arc http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Elite-1600-Horizontal-Rangefinder/dp/B004I8X2G4 I havent done a lot of testing with it though but at only 500 and with the capability to range out to 1600 plus (I have gotten some rock outcrops on hillsides at around 1700). Definitely one to keep in mind although I am sure some of the guys here know some nice high end ones for you.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Easily the Bushy 1600. They suck as NOC's but are an awesome LRF for the money.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Swarovski for sure. Great strong laser. Sold my Leica 1200 to get it and was well worth the upgrade.

Not sure which Bushnell lasers we used at the Brawl but I wouldn't buy one.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

My Arc's smoke my buddies Swaro's. Plus not battery issues.

What battery issues?

When the battery goes dead it can't be changed by the end user. Needs to be sent back to Swaro.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

LOL Who told you that? Totally untrue. I take my battery out to fly as it's lithium and they don't like them under the plane. Easy to swap out. Unscrew the battery cap and pop in a new one.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Um, have to send it back to Swaro?

I guess it has to be sent back to them to switch between meters and yards too...if you are too incompetent to use a flat bladed screwdriver to remove one screw.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I like my Leica 1600. I think they're still on sale for 650 at EuroOptic. That's a good chunk of change left over for ammo.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

If swaro won't range it then I cant shoot that far anyway. Batteries are easy to switch out. The laser works well in all conditions. I have ranged well out past 1000 with great accuracy.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I agree with not trusting the Bushnell. If you are ranging steel then you might have luck ranging past 800 but from my experience, they do a shitty job ranging non-reflective targets at any kind of distance. For a hunting lrf I see no problem with Bushnell but for long range shooting I would pass on them.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

do a google search there is a couple good rangefinder comparisons.
Swaros on top second is the 1200 and 1600 leicas

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Bushnell elite arc 1600, bino or monocular are worlds better that all the older Bushnell lrf. And the best under $1k IMHO .
I have owned 3 Swaros and ALL of them have failed [ factory defects ]. Repairs take 8-10 weeks as they have to go back to Austria. I think im jinxed with Swaro.
I wouldnt look at the Leica unless I needed a pocket sized LRF.

Last time I checked mine it has a screwed down flap that you undo to change the batteries.................. Like every other Swaro laser guide ever made.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

It obviously depends on who you ask because I like my Leica 1600 hands down to the laser guide I had and the Bushnell 1600's.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I have the Bushnell 1600 monocular model, I've hit tree clusters to 1800 yards, 1600 w/out much fuss, had them out at the range yesterday for a test again. 1636 on a small cluster of trees.

I don't range reflective stuff, can't really say how far they'd go, but for a finder that claims 1600 on reflective and 1000 on trees, they are over achieving greatly.

Damn things work and are just easy, near boring they work so well.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I have a question, are certain colors more reflective than others on steel targets? I use the neon orange on mine with a black circle center and sometimes my range finder has a bit of difficulty reading at only 400 yards, then other times it's no problem out to 800. I've got the Nikon Rangemaster 1000.

The ones they had at Rifles Only were the new version but not the ARC. Hopefully the ARC are better.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I'll tell you this, I have used a few different rangefinders, and for your budget the Swaro works the best of any I have used. I am not talking about ranging a tree from your house on a perfect day either. I am talking about antelope hunting in different cloud covers and sunlight. The Swaro still isn't reliable out to 1k all the time, but it is the best I have used so far by far. I haven't tried the Bushnell 1600 stuff yet, but I am very hesitant to based on internet reviews. Even a picture doesn't tell the whole story. My next range finder will be the Terrapin (as I can't afford anything more than that right now). I have used Leica LRF binoculars 10x40, Laser Guide, Leica 1200 scan, Leica 1200, Nikon 1200 monarch gold. They might all work on steel, reflective, or the great light situation, but the Laser Guide out performs them all it really isn't even close. I have owned a Laser Guide 2x, and have sold both pair in favor of something better, and both times I have regretted selling the LG. I am certain the same would be for the Bushnell.

YMMV, I am just tired of being disappointed by LRF that claim so much and never seem to deliver. The Bushy gets rave reviews by some, but at the same time, the Brawl wasn't the first competition requiring use of them that left competitors disappointed.

The ones at RO were indeed the new ones with the ARC. I know this for certain because I have one of the 2 that were used there. Easily ranges clusters of trees at 1300 yards while using it off hand. I am anxious to get it out on a tripod to see what it can really do.

The 1600 ARC is going to be incredibly hard to beat for the money.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Well if they were they sucked because I couldn't even range a berm at about 600 yards with them. Hopefully it was just those sets.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I recently bought the Leica 1600 on sale at Cabellas for $549.00. I have ranged trees and buildings out to 1500 yards and I am very happy with it. I spent weeks researching here on the Hide and checked a few models out at Bass Pro Shop. The Swaros are nice but I didn't care for the large round ranging circle in them. The small ranging square in the Leicas works well for me and when they went on sale, it was a no brainer.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Swarovski The sight ring can be a little big but very functional. I have used some that are much faster but I have ranged with mine a little past a mile. Being still makes that possible.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I use nikon monarch gold 1200. For money seems work great. Only had it out to 800 so far. No probs yets

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I like the Zeiss Victory PRF for my needs.

Ranges very quickly & works well in falling snow.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Fusion ARC 1600 Binos it serves 2 roles and well under $1k if you price shop

Ditto the Zeiss - Mine works great.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

+1 for ARC for that price point

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

I have a Leica 1600 and I love it I have used the Swarovski and I do think there better but the Leica is awesome and I've ranged elk past 1000 yards glass is clear also

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

The ARC 1600 range to 1493 offhand into trees in full sunlight in s. Carolina at noon!!! They continually range without error on non-reflective targets such as clothing, rocks, trees, etc. out past 1500 yards with just resting them on something solid.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

+1 for the Fusion ARC. Here in the Texas Panhandle, it has been rumored that we have bright sunny days. My ARC has worked for me extremely well.

Re: Whats the best Range Finder for $1K

Vectronix terripin for $2000. Save longer for it. Smokes all the above mentioned. Thats what I'm doing. If I can sell my leica I'm going to upgrade. Leica is fine (mine works within it's parameters) but I want more performance. So vectronix it is. BUy once cry once. THis is my 3rd rangefinder. I wish I would have went this route from the begining. It would have been cheaper. Thats just me anyway. Good luck
