Carroll Shelby...RIP

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

No front page news, no mass media frenzy.... A true American Icon.. RIP

Today is not a good day.

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

RIP A true American giant.

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

I'll miss his inspirations. I've always wanted a nice Shelby Cobra. I did own one of these when I was really young and it was a ton of fun:

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

I worked for a guy who has a real AC Cobra in addition to Elvis' limo and a bunch of other wicked cool cars. Anyhow, he did a car show one year and Carroll Shelby was there signing autographs on 8x10 photos and cars (mostly Vipers right on the driver's side pillars). I worked the event (I was in high school) and got to talk to him for a quite a while before and after the show, pretty cool guy, he signed a picture for me that I still have. I remember feeling bad for him because he couldn't do much (heart problems) other than sit at the table and sign autographs only getting up for the occasional car. He certainly leaves quite the legacy behind.

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

he had been looking pretty bad the last few years but his stamp on the car world will be remembered forever

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

RIP oh Master!
Up at Sear's Point, before NASCAR, before Infineon, there is and has been a vintage race event called the Wine Country Classic. The weekend before this event there is usually a Shelby Club meeting and track day. Anyone can belong to the club(Datsun 240Z's, BMW's, Ferrarri's, et al) to get the track time. All cars are welcome, and a member can bring a firend(with helmet) to get rides in some really fast, cool cars. I was with a friend and got to ride in this old Shelby Prepped Boss 302. The driver was an older gent, beat up cowboy hat, crappy looking work boots, and farmer gloves. He was very nice, and ran that 'Stang like the devil himself around that track. We were passing Ferrarri's that were in teh higher group, adn I had a hell of a a ride. When I got out and went over to my pop,he was just looking, with this look of total disbelief. He looks at me and goes,"You just got a ride in a car with Carrol Shelby!" I loooked back, and the old dude just waved and was driving back into the paddock. The next weekend at the big event, Shelby's were teh feature vehicle(ALL the Daytona Coupes in a line, the King Cobra Can Am car, so many shelby R models, a rare '66 Coupe Rally car...man...) Anyway, I got me this poster, adn went to stand in line to get it signed. When I got up to Mr. Shelby, he siogned my poster, winked, and said,"That was a damn good ride last weekend son". I about shit, fainted, and could not believe I rode in a car with Carrol Shelby and didn't even recognize him while it was happening.
Carrol Shelby has built so many race cars, and experimental Mustangs that they are highly sought out. Many have been crashed, thought to be dead and buried, but brought back to life. The rarest vehicles are the King Cobra Can Am car(two I think), the six Daytona Coupes, and the rally coupe. There is also four prototype 351W powered cars, two with 4 speed top loaders and two with auto trans. The Dragon Snake drag cobra, and a few FIA 289 powered cars are also on the small list.
From his days of racing a bird cage Maserati, to his deep relationship with Ford, and Ford Racing, to the new repop '67 Shelby King Snake's and Ford Mustangs, Carrol Shelby will always not only be well remembered and immortalized, he will always be my personal favorite, and racing hero. Fuck that old dude could drive! Man, a full house Boss 302, inertia drifting the carousel, down onto the back straight up to and over 120mph and into a slight inertia drift into turn 7(the hairpin), and down through the esses at speed, totally unbelivable, fun, and one hell of a ride!
RIP Mr. Shelby

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

For anybody who doesn't know, this world has lost a TRUE racing legend. May he rest in peace.

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

If my memory serves me right--The fastest car in the world---0mph to 100mph and back to 0mph. (Popular Mechanics)

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

Went up to his shop and talked with him many times when he sponsered our race truck when I worked for the Nissan factory race team. A true legend and very nice guy considering how he changed the face of racing and "factory" race cars. He will be missed.

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

While famous for the AC-derived Cobra... the Cobra Coupe and the GT-40 were what really won his races.

Also not a reach to call him 'father of the musclecar' and he was a key part of the Viper design team. Love it or hate it... that car was iconic.

Amazing seat-of-the-pants designer with a knack for understanding how to make things go fast w.out wind tunnels, computer programs, simulations and models. He was the fastest failed chicken-rancher ever.

A guy who personified the can-do American spirit!

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

Remember when the Cobra and GT350R came to my local Ford dealer, those were the days. RIP Mr. shelby

Re: Carroll Shelby...RIP

My all time favorite, of course 'at speed' on 'The 'Ring'

My tribute design to the racer. An as raced 1960 Masarati 300S. Note the tributte detail on the rear fenders. I changed 'Driven By' to reflect the passing of a great man. The car is painted as raced by Carrol Shelby. In the game it has never lost. It is wicked fast, and stupid out of control in inertia drifts, but puts on one hell of a show...yeah, in between classes I relax with video games

Rest in Speed Carrol Shelby
