Gunsmithing Best Aftermarket Barrel

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

I don't know if this is that interesting to anybody at this point, but I wanted to add this information just in case anyone followed it or finds this on a search about prefit barrels.
I need to correct my earlier post that stated the price of $330 for a Brux Savage prefit. That was an old price from a Gunsmith who no longer does them at that price, but hasn't updated it.

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply: 763-682-4296

McGowen(button) $265 http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/index.html
Shilen(button) $269 http://www.shilen.com/
Criterion(button) $280 http://criterionbarrels.com/production.html

I talked to Jim today and he said he's moving away from the McGowen. He feels that Criterion is the best bang for your buck.

Devin Sinner at sin arms: http://www.sin-arms.com/index.html

Brux(cut) $420 http://www.bruxbarrels.com/
Rock Creek(cut) $420 http://www.rockcreekbarrels.com/
Lothar-Walther(button) $275 http://www.lothar-walther.com/339.php

Devin can make you a Brux or Rock Creek any way you want. He says that he is steering people from the Rock Creek because the wait is so long right now. I think this might be because of Rock Creeks release of their own prefit line. If I wanted a certain twist/length/contour combination in a quality cut barrel, a Brux from Devin might be the way to go.

Other prefits(factory):
Rock Creek(cut) $450
Rock Creek(button)$325

Benchmark(button) $400 (360-652-2594)

In the end I decided to get a Criterion from Jim. Part of what I'm buying is CS from JIM. Criterion just happens to make the 7mm-08 in the configuration I want it so I see no reason to get all custom about it. Rock Creek will soon have a button rifled barrel for $45 more, but I think of the Criterion as a button rifled Krieger anyway so I don't know if it's worth $45 more.
I'm going to be getting all the tools from Jim needed to swap the barrels (except for the go gage) for $112 total. Plus Jim will walk me through the process over the phone.
I will update this after I put on the Criterion, but that will be some time from now.

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

I received my Criterion 26" 7mm08 1/9"twist varmint contour barrel from Jim at Northland shooter supply yesterday evening. I think the shipping cost was very reasonable considering the weight. The action wrench alone weighs 8.5lbs.
It will still be a little while before I can put it on and shoot it, but it sure looks nice. I've heard several people mention that the rifling tool can sometimes skip with button rifled barrels, but the bore of my Criterion barrel looks fantastic. I'm very pleased so far.

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

I appreciate all the leg work you did on this! I have a Model 10 action I'll need a barrel for when I get the money saved. I'm thankful all this info. is consolidated here.

++++1 I couldn't agree with you more... the only problem is the line you are in to get one! I've had one on order for 6 months for my .338LM but..... the wait is more than worth the time

</div></div>Thanks for letting me know it was helpful. If you decide to get the Criterion or just get the tools from Jim Briggs the action wrench, nut wrench, and recoil lug currently total $112. These are all the tools you need to swap it yourself.

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

OK, so I took the rifle over to my dad's and we put on the barrel. It looks terrific! It was a little harder than it looked in the video, but not too bad. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video was removing the extractor on the boltface for headspacing, but that was pretty easy. Just be sure and do this is such a way that you don't lose the detent ball which is super tiny. We put the bolt in a box to do this so the detent ball wouldn't disappear.
Here are the instructions we used as well as what we used to calculate the necessary torque for the barrel nut.

I wont be able to shoot it for awhile, but I think it's going to do pretty good.

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

I finally got to shoot this thing with a proper rest and it is obviously more accurate than I am. My first 4 shots made one hole. My first 2 shots actually just looked like one bullet hole. At first I wasn't sure where the 2nd shot went. The hole didn't look any different.
It gets dirty fast, but cleans easily. It seems like a very tight bore. As long as I keep it clean and make a good shot I can't ask for more. I'm glad I got Criterion prefit. Even with my new Sinclair rest I can't shoot as good as this barrel. If you can tell the difference between this barrel and a more expensive one than you are one heck of a shot.
FYI,I haven't really tried to work up a load yet. I'm just using the minimum 45gr of H4350 with 162 Amax's .01" off the lands.

12-4-12 The Lee book is different than other reloading info for 162gr and H4350. Lee's posted minimum of 45gr is most others max load. Max load for Lee is 48gr. I was having real pressure issues by 46.5gr.

Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel

Would anyone want to get into the hows and whys of what specifically makes a better barrel better, and the best ones best?

+1000 coupled with one of Ajs bighorns or even a pre-64 model 70, I can't think of a better barrel out there.
