Im building a 300 win mag long range rifle. ill be shooting anywhere from 50 yards to 1000 yards cuz im gonna hunt with it. im putting a muzzle brake on it and was wondering what length of barrel should i put on it not including the the muzzle brake. just the barrel before the muzzle brake is added.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

I prefer at least 26" with a LR 300 Win to get the performance I expect. I would go with no shorter than a 24" bbl if it's to be a lighter weight pack rifle .

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

What about a 25'' barrel. how do they compare to a 26'' barrel

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

most people i know use 26

i also am getting a 26

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

A 25" tube is perfect for a 300WM I have 2 that are cut to 25" and you wont be giving up much of anything!

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

My 300 just got tore down for a larger caliber but I used a 30" Kreiger. Shooting 190gn bullets was pushing 2980fps with RL22 and on 69.3gn of powder. Nice clean burn and accurate as hell. Still getting 1/2 MOA at 1000yards. The weight wasn't bad but I'm used to carrying 40-60lbs. packs when hunting. I never put a brake on mine and could shoot all day without hearing protection. Recoil was nothing too.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

Ran a .300 WM 1,000 yard "any/any" gun with a 25" barrel. Shot great and I was getting 2,820 fps out of 200gr SMK's.

Distantplinker...You'll pay for that shooting all day without hearing protection. I am 41 and have been shooting since I was 6. I have had tinnitus since 1995 all because of no hearing protection. I have about 40% loss in my left ear and about 20% in my right. I hear loud crickets 24/7 and piss my wife off every day because I have to crank the damn tv crazy loud to hear it. Start wearing hearing protection or get good medical insurance as the Audiologist is going to be your new best friend.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

I know, I know... I would say you sound like the old lady by my "selective" hearing went out on her years ago. I'm 37 now with near perfect hearing still ans have been shooting since about 5 also. I have to now with a 338RUM with a large brake. I use a suppressed SBR'S when I teach classes ...

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

22 to 24" for me, if I'm planning to hunt with it. Take a look at the SWAT article by Eugene Nielsen and TacOps about barrel length.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

I love a 24" barrel for any round really, 24" magnum contour barrel with a 1 in 10 twist will be a perfect hunting barrel as well as long range barrel.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

Mine is a 24" and it seems to be perfect. It deff has no problem reaching out there, especially 1000yds. Good luck.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

Follow some of jrob's post... He is using very short barrels with pretty decent number... I think maybe a 22in...

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

The only reason I went 30" was powder reduction and was able to maintain just under 3000fps with 190smk. As much shooting as I do it actually seemed to extend the barrel life not burning all the dang powder in the barrel. The first barrel I had seemed just as accurate after break-in as it did when I hit 3K rounds in it. I am stuck on Kreiger after that barrel performance.

Re: best 300 win mag barrel specs.

More important than its physical length would be for us first to know what bullet your building it around first. Factors such as twist, cant and squeeze have as much, if not more, to do with velocity as barrel length. Note also that recoil is a product of physics that starts long before the bullet has left the muzzle! As such numerous test will support the theory of shorter barrels, within reason, can be more accurate. Especially if the shooter has any positional or procedural issues with recoil management they will become more pronounced as the barrel length is increased.
