Range Report Southwest ammo 175?

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

At Rifle's Only, based on my dope to 1000 yards, my DTA SRS was getting around 2700fps. As for accuracy...

I'm pretty pleased with it!

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

I ran 5 rounds over a chrono, I was at 2708, 2709, 2704, 2674 and 2675. 18 degrees f, 120 feet above sea level.

26" AIAW.

It doesn't shoot bughole groups at 100 yards in any of my three .308s, more like .75 inch groups, but it seems to settle in and tighten up at longer distances. It worked great out to 1070 yards a few weekends back.

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

I haven't chrono'd it, but my experience would support bm11's findings. My 308's a 26" Rock and my handloads average 2696fps, and the SW Ammo's 175's I've shot ran the exact same dope out to 710 yds as my usual fare.

I was getting groups around 3/4-1" at 100, but I don't shoot groups for shit. What mattered to me was I dialed my usual dope for the shot and centerpunched 1/2 IPSCs out to 700.

I'll shoot it anyday I'm shooting a 308 in a match, no reservations!!

Here's the "group work" that I've done with SW Ammo. I know all about 3 shot groups so save your breath, but these groups were shot by a buddy at the end of a range session-I got the idea last minute and handed him 3 loaded magazines and asked him to shoot a group with each out of my rifle without knowing what was in them, my own little "blind study" with a tiny database:

L-R:
-my 42.2gr I4895, Lapua brass, WLR primer, 175SMK load
-SW Ammunition's 175SMK load
-Fed 168 FGMM that I keep around for troubleshooting/eliminating variables.

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

We load to a nominal 2650 from a 24" barrel. Reported velocities hav varried considerably for individual rifles and barrels. We normally run about 2485 from a cutdown 19" Remington varmint barrel. We have received reports as high as 2775 from 26" suppressed bolt guns.

Typically the GAP/Bartlein rifles tend to shoot the fastest. We are running them at an accuracy node just short of the max powder charge, and I think you'll be hard pressed to find any faster factory 175s out there.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

Mike,

Can you give any similar info on the .308 176 gr Predator solid load? I've tried a few searches but my Google-fu is apparently compromised on that topic. Specifically, MV, BC, and any info on the design of the Predator bullet itself? Thanks!

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

My rifle is suppressed, so that would be worth noting. Depending on the powder used, on an 80 degree day I should have been getting closer to 2750 I would think.

Also- I would agree that this load is right on the edge of being a max load. I get crowned primers shooting it in my AW.

The 308 predators are loaded a little faster, closer to 2700. The BC used to be listed on the website, but I don't see it any more.

I will check on it when I get back in the shop on Monday.

They are constructed from turned brass, with minimal bearing surface, so the pressures are actually lower than with a traditional jacketed lead bullet.

Been shooting them from a GAP .308,just as good as FGMM.

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

Finally got a chance to really burn through some of my 175 Southwest Ammo over the weekend and it's the shizzle! I was smoking 4" clay pigeons @ 556 yards and when they were all busted-up, I was picking-out and hitting smaller fragments.

Do not hesitate...Good brass, very accurate, great price. Thanks Southwest!

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

I've got a few boxes of 175SMK Premium and Regular coming in tomorrow. I'm liking the results posted thus far. Can't beat $1 a round. Thanks Southwest!

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

From my factory Rem 5R...
72 Degrees, +950' DA, 0-2mph wind at 10-11 'oclock...
Chrono at 5 yrds out:

2620fps
2618fps
2611fps
2615fps

I only had 4 shots left so that's all I got to run though my friend's chrono, but at 100 yards it is normally all sub moa year around.

Re: Southwest ammo 175?

Here's a couple of pics I posted in the group buy thread showing 5rd groups shot @ 100yds with the 175gr FC cased ammo from SW. Based on my calculator and actual dope to 1000yds I'm getting 2600fps out of my 20" AI AE Mk III with Sandstorm suppressor.
