hello i am new here and have a question about shooting beyond 500 yds with a .300 win mag. i am currently shooting a savage 110BA 300wm and i am using hornady superformance 150gr gmx the rifle is performing very well at 400 with this ammo shooting sub MOA groups without a problem but if i want to go longer lets just say 7 to 800 should i go with a heavier bullet such as a 180gr or so the rifle has a 1-10 twist rate any info would be greatley appreciated thanks.

Re: savage 110BA .300 win mag

Check the reloading section for some good info on 300 WM loads. I've had good luck with the 190 Sierra MatchKing, and the 208 Hornady AMax. Everyone has their favorites, but I like Hodgdon H1000 powder. Just remember to start them on the low side and work up. CKruse

Topgun, welcome to the forum.

With a 1-10, a heavier bullet is definitely going to be better. I have a Savage 10FP in 308, 1-10 twist and have tried 168gr Hornady at 2700+ fps and 178gr Hornady at 2650fps and the 178 gr is a MUCH better performer past 500yds. The heavier bullet stabilizes better with a high twist rate, and with a better BC and more mass, will hold trajectory longer and fight wind/drag better.

thank you fastex for the insight i guess my next question is how heavy is to heavy im at 150 now should i go 180, 200 or should i just work it out at the range to see which is the best performer?

Re: savage 110BA .300 win mag

TOPGuN050,

I am still fine tuning my load, but I am having really good luck with the Berger 210gr VLD Hunting Bullets (BC=0.631), H1000, RWS Brass, and Fed-215M Primers. I've been able to shoot a couple of 3-shot 3" groups at 600 yards and a 5-shot 8" groups at 1000 yards. The 1:10 twist rate favors the heavier bullet and the heavier bullet favors the slower burning powder. If you don't ever intend to shoot an animal with your gun, you might want to start out with the new Berger Match Hybrid Target Bullets in 215gr or 230gr which have much higher Ballistic Coefficients (BC) For example the 215gr = 0.696 BC and 230gr = 0.743. I will caution you to use reloading dies/seating plugs that are designed for the longer VLD bullets. I was using the Redding Match Die Sets without the VLD Seat Plugs and I was having a really hard time getting consistent seating depths, once I purchased the Redding Type-S Dies and the Redding VLD Seat plugs it made all the difference in the world. Best of luck on your shooting and would love to hear your results with your combination of bullets, brass, powder, etc. W.

Re: savage 110BA .300 win mag

if you don't handload, try out Federal Gold Medal Match 190 grain and Southwest Ammo's 190 smk load. Those loads will be plenty good. If you really want to go past 1000yds, then the 208 A-MAX, 210 VLDs, or 220 smk will be useful.
