What happened to my case head??

I've seen pierced primers before, but never anything like this. I had 50 rounds loaded and only 2 did this. It was a 100 Sierra with 47 grains varget.

Re: What happened to my case head??

Your primer leaked which started burning thru the case head.

It might be due to low pressure if that was only a 100gr bullet. You might look at your bolt-face and see if there is pitting on it. That looks like it was a pretty hot jet!

Re: What happened to my case head??

I once had a bad batch or Remington 9 1/2 primers that burned through like yours did. Likely a bad batch of primers. Try a different brand.

Re: What happened to my case head??

+1 to closely inspecting your bolt face. It just got blowtorched.

Re: What happened to my case head??

Winchester primer?

Seems like I've been seeing a lot of reports of leaking primers with Winchester primers lately.

Yes they were Winchester. I just got back from the store with a brick of Federal 210M.

Re: What happened to my case head??

I'd be shocked if the primer caused that. More than likely that is a HOT load, and you have pressure signs. What do the other cases look like? If you are shooting a 100 grain bullet with 47 grains of Varget, then that charge is too low and causing a pressure spike. Either way, why 100 grain in a 308 with Varget?

Re: What happened to my case head??

The primers on the other rounds were slightly flattened, but no cratering. No stiffness in the bolt handle.

Bullets were 110 Sierra varmint bullets. Why you ask? Because I had a bunch of them and wanted to shoot them up at shorter distance and save my heavier bulets for long range.

Re: What happened to my case head??

It looks like in second pic that there is a small hole in primer.
Just right below the letter A in Lapua. Top pic looks like hole is under the U. Way to low of powder charge. I have seen this many times. Add more powder.

Re: What happened to my case head??

At least you didn't do like I did yesterday. Blew up a bolt in a .308 using a 175 smk, 44 gr Varget, Lapua brass and br2 primer. After the smoke cleared, the chrono read 2972 fps. Whoops!

Is there something wrong with your powder scale?? 44.0 gr of Varget with a 175 SMK should be fine. Did you have the bullet jammed into the lands?

Re: What happened to my case head??

Varget would not be my choice for 100 grn..

No way.....44gr of varget would never cause that even in lapua brass. Something else happened.

Re: What happened to my case head??

Check case length on the unfired rounds. May be longer than ideal. Only Kaboom I ever witnessed was 'unexplained' until they measured the case lengths.

Re: What happened to my case head??

Red hawk nailed it, Loose primer pockets. Check to see if it pitted your bolt face. Been there done that.

Probably because with that light bullet you are using,Varget is to slow.

Re: What happened to my case head??

That's what I was thinking too. The low pressure didn't allow the primer to seal. No seal ment blow-by started which looks like that.

I think Varget would be a little on the slow side for that light-weight bullet.

Ding ding! Winner!

The slight interference fit (on the order of .001") of a tight-fitting primer in a primer pocket does NOT generate a seal that can handle 50,000+ psi. Rather, chamber pressure blows the primer cup outward, sealing it to the walls of the primer pocket, much the same way as chamber pressure blows the caseneck outward, creating a seal between the case and the chamber.

Re: What happened to my case head??

Turbo 54, I disagree. I had 223 brass that the primers almost fell into. Like a stupie I shot them. I was shooting a hot load. I had the same thing happen as MichK above. 110 grain bullets will make as much pressure as a 168 when loaded properly.

Yes they will but with the proper powder. Varget is a very slow powder for a 110 gr .308 cal bullet. I'd bet the cases were pretty sooty too. Sootier than a normal Varget load that is.
