Ok, I have 1,000$ to spend and I need advice on which barrel I.e. Douglass, bartlien..... The rifle is a 700 police .300 win mag that I have just about shot the barrel out. I shoot 210 vlds so I would like a 1:10 twist and atleast 26". It will be used for LR hunting and long range target shooting. Also does anybody know what contoured barrel I would need. Stock is hs precision police version. Any thoughts, recommendations, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Its most likely a REM Varmint contour but your best bet is to remove your barreled action from the stock and take measurements using a caliper. What your looking for is the diameter of the straight shank right infront of the action, prob 1.2, and length before it starts to taper down. Your barrel blank will need an extra inch or so of length in this dimension for action threads. Then plot different diameters at different distances from the acion face on a piece of paper. Connect the dots and form a basic drawing of your contour. Look for a similar but not larger blank matching your barrel. I like Krieger and Bartlien myself but you wont go wrong with any of the top manufacturers. Find a GOOD smith to barrel the action and True the action if you would like. I use Bob Green in PA. send the stock as well to ensure propper clearances.

I have a Shilen SS SM 300WM #7 1:10 25" on a remy 700 action. I like it. Anything more than a #7, IMO will just be too damn heavy to carry. If I had it to do again, I think I would go with a #6 straight taper. The blank cost me, $360 I think? I did the work myself, and so I was only out the cost of the barrel. I couldnt find a reputable local smith, but if you have one in your area, GTG. One recommendation, tho. Thread the muzzle and have a good brake installed. A good brake will take alot of the recoil out of that 300.

Call Bugholes here on the hide, Buy a barrel from his stock, He only has the top brands, contact any one of the smiths on this site and describe your expectations and time line, box it up and send it in to your choice of smiths. You should have money left over and wont wait 4-9 months on a barrel delivery.

+1...He does great smith work too for a very reasonable price and fast turnaround. Just send him your rifle and he can hook you up for way less than $1000. Check out his website for barrel/gun smithing services and prices.

If you can afford to drop a grand on a barrel then Call Jense Precision and get a Carbon Fiber Wrapped Varmint contour at 40%-60% weight savings for $950ish and pay a smith a couple of hundred to install it...drop a couple of pounds off your rifle and get a new barrel at the same time...

I heard they have a few barrels in stock and can ship fairly quickly...

Benchmark barrels in Arlington, WA is producing match winning rifle barrels. I'd google their address and contact them. They do excellent work.
