I've been thinking about a new farm/varmint gun...and have decided to go with a Savage 12bvss in .223. It's going to be used at my range for steel/paper (200yds), at my brother-in-law's tree farm for steel (up to 500yds..possibly more if I get out and look better..have 84 acres), and also used at his farm for groundhogs with most shots between 250-400yds.

I'm def going with a Sightron SIII, that's not the question....the question is...should I go with the 8-32x56 or the 6-24x50... I know that most of the shooting will be 200yds and closer, as that's close to me...and the tree farm every few weekends (it's ~2.5hrs away) so I was leaning towards the 6-24....but the 8-32 really isn't much more money....and I'm likely never to use LESS than half or more of the available magnification....so would I really be giving anything up to step up to the 8-32x56?

Down the road I hope to do some 1000yd shooting since Hawk's Ridge re-opened.....so I'm considering buying a 6mm or 6.5mm bolt face and doing a 6cm or 6.5cm or 260 at some point...and giving a go at that distance...but, that'll be next summer at the earliest with my present schedule.

Also...I know I want to go ahead and get the exposed turrets...I'm not a huge fan of holding over when I can just dial to my needed setting...but I'm unsure if going MIL or MOA would be better for my useage.... I have a range finder, i will NOT be ranging with the scope, but will using it to estimate clicks...but just unsure if I should go with the MIL Dot and Mil knobs, Mil Dot and MOA knobs, or MOA-2/MOA scope...

Since the cost is about the same, I'd go with the most scope for the money so my choice would be the 8-32 model. Definitely have matched turrets/reticle so you need to decide if you want to go Mil/Mil or MOA2/MOA.

I have the Sightron SIII 10-50x60 in illuminated MOA2-MOA and love it.

X2 on the 8-32, since there's not a big money diffrence. There's not that much magnification diffrence on the low end, to warrant the 6x.

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

I hunted for rodents for years with an 8x32 Burris on a 223.

The 32 is good for paper, as I can see the holes at 200 yards.

But the recoil tends to make me loose some of the pink mist visuals at 32x.

To understand both systems, read this.

Once you learn each system, each should be equally easy to use. I personally prefer MOA since I find ranging easier. Simply divide the known height of the target by the number of MOA it subtends in your scope and multiply by 100 to get the range in yards. Also the bullet drop charts that I have show me the drop in MOA at different distances.

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

For your stated purpose, I'd go with the 8-32X. As stated, there isn't much difference on the bottom, but it sure would suck to want more magnification and not have it.

As for MOA vs. mil, I tend to stick to MOA because the adjustments are finer.

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

I bought a 8-32 with 1/8min dot and 1/8min adjustments. This is for known distance paper punching: F-TR and prone shooting. As such, this is a specialized scope for the above purpose.

The glass on my scope is clear and usable to the 32x. During matches I rarely use more than 28 or so due to environmental factors, but more is nicer when you can use it.

For an all around scope a ranging reticle/matching turret setup is the ticket. MOA/MIL is totally up to you, but for general use a MIL/MIL scope is fantastic. MOA/MOA if you are hardwired with those adjustments in your head, or finer adjustments are wanted.

My only bitch with these scopes is the lack of adjustment arrows on the scope body, makes me have to peer onto the top of the turret for a reminder. Surely a non-issue for most, but coming to scope use for competition from service rifle has caused more than a few errant adjustments. Also, after shooting 60-80 rounds of .308 Win on a brand new scope, I had a few floaters appear in the scope. I have not yet sent it back to Sightron. Kinda left me feeling underwhelmed by my choice, YMMV.

Sightron had a bad batch, call them, they will take care of you, if you have time constraints let them know.

I had an above and beyond experience with their customer service, I'll continue with their products.

calling4life,

That's great to hear, and something that Sightron has made clear to the shooting community. I guess I just wish that a new scope wasn't having issues. The floaters are mainly a distraction. Adjustments, parralax adjustment, and glass clarity are just fine.

I will take your advice. Thanks.

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

IMHO 6-24x50 is more of a practical range, and that's enough mag for 1000 yards. If you are only shooting targets and trying for groups, then go with the 8-32x

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

I have a 6-24 LRMD and for the price point a great scope. Sightron glass suprised me with how good it is for the money. The down side is reticle choice ... the MOA reticle is better imo. The Sightron glass is much better than my PST at 24x but the FOV is narrower. I shoot well past 1000 with the 24x and find its more than enough.

Re: 8-32 or 6-24 Sightron SIII....???

I own both, there is very little difference in quality at full power. I would go with the 8-32
