Just wondering if anybody has any experience with this bullett in the 338lm. ojive consistancy, or how they seem to be working for you????

Re: Hornady 285gr BTHP MATCH for the 339LM ???

Pretty much my favorite bullet at this point. The Bergers are good bullets, for sure, but I can't get them to shoot well at mag length (3.7") Loaded long, they are very, very good.

The Lapua 300's shoot well at mag length, but I can get a bit more velocity from the 285's, so E&W are about dead equal for me and the Hornady bullets cost less.

They've had some weight consistancy issues, but that's being worked on. I weigh then and sort ojive lengths into lots. Length is very good, but I want < .2gr differances between bullets to minimize elevation issues. Sorted like that, I get sub minute accuracy beyond 1500 yards.

What kind of jump do you have at 3.7 vs when you load long with the 300 Bergers? Reason for asking is I'm having a barrel cut so I can just touch the lands at mag length hoping to overcome some of that same issue. My COAL will be 3.741 if I'm just touching so I'll be backing off that a little.

I never thought of cutting the barrel to reach the lands great idea.

Should let me seat lighter bullets closer as well but we'll see. It's all a trade off anyway.

I end up with a .07 jump at mag length, which they don't seem to like. At .02 or less, they shoot fine. I'm getting another barrel soon and I'l probably do just what you are, set the throat length to spec for the load.

Thanks much. Good reference for when I start a load for it. I'm in hurry up and wait mode right now.

Re: Hornady 285gr BTHP MATCH for the 339LM ???

Question for you guys, does the throat erode faster being close to the lands?

Re: Hornady 285gr BTHP MATCH for the 339LM ???

So i got my 110 ba today and started to set bulletts to mag length for scenars and hornadys, but when i tried them in the chamber the bolt woundnt close. so i set them back bit by bit until there was no resistance, or marks from the lands. ( i dont have a modified case for it yet) but i had to move it back .100 to get it to just touch the lands. col finshed out at 3.700. I guess i'm wondering if savage has changed there chamber diamensions or if i have lucked out getting a chamber that can shoot from the mag and still touch or be jammed???? not sure i would want to jam 338 or not, new to the calibur???

Re: Hornady 285gr BTHP MATCH for the 339LM ???

You should find the Scenars going out about .020 more to touch than the Hornadys. 3.7 is fine for COAL. I'd start pressure testing at touching, then do the OCW tests and finally tweak seating for minimum group size. Often that is a bit short of touching. Jamming is for soft seated benchrest stuff. Don't even mess with that if you are not single feeding and willing to deal with a stuck bullet if you need to unload.

Re: Hornady 285gr BTHP MATCH for the 339LM ???

Yup, your right about the scenars Cory. .020. i will try them just touching and start low.
