Is the 338 Lapua still the king of long range hitting power? What else gives it a run for the money? .50 doesn't do it for me.

Fishing for some inspiration and really want to know what other people have been up to. This thread is for 1000m plus rifle combinations; well the potential to reach far far out. Show us what you have got and please do educate us while you are at it.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

If the 338 isn't expensive enough for you, look into the 375 and 408 Cheytac.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Lots of choices. If ya dont know that you better search it because there are a TON of them.Way more than I wanna list I will assure you.SHORT list.
338/408
375 chey
408 chey
338/416
416 barret
stupid # of wildcats 338 and up in caliber.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

the whole snipetac line and the 416 barret come to mind also.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

510 Allen Magnum puts them all to shame

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Lots of choices....even a 338 Edge is faster then the Lapua.

375, 408, 416, etc..etc..

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Spend time lurking in the ELR- Beyond 1000yds section, you will stumble across stuff you never knew existed. There is an unbelieveable amount of info here if you take time to read it.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

I'm slightly confused as to how the .50cal isn't bigger in badder then 338lm. I understand 338lm has an edge in some areas but the .50cal deff has an edge in some areas as well.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

If i ever make the jump into .338 territory it'll be with the .338 Norma Mag.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Looks like I have some reading and surfing to do. I shot the .50 some while back and it never really gave me the confidence that it could hit anything that I was aiming at; better belt fed. The 338 was much better.

Anything out of these new boys on the block getting established and getting the thumbs up?

Thank you for the replies as I have been out of the loop for a while and this thread was to fast track me into the right direction.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

338 Excaliber,338 Lazzeroni Titan,338-378 Weatherby, 338 Kubla Kahn. The 338 Egde is faster than the Lapua but not by enough to get excited. The Norma is equal with less powder. 338`s based on Cheytac case is barrel EATERS.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

416 Barrett is pretty bad ass but it is also pretty damn expensive every time you pull the trigger. Why would you need anything bigger than a 338LM, planning a vacation to Jurassic Park?

turbo54 speaks the truth. If you're looking for a gun that will not only put a bigger hole down range but also a bigger hole in your wallet, go for a CheyTac .408 M200. Those babies start at around 11 grand and cost more than 10 bucks a round. If thats still not expensive enough, I'll make you a deal. You buy two .408's and I'll take one for free!

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

.408 Cheytac is the bomb... I will never own one, and I believe that I can say this confidently.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

375 Cheytac is where it is at. 2500 yard range and a BC close to that of a 50 BMG but much faster and lighter load.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Somebody was making a 20 mm.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

This sounds like the kind of question a gamer would ask.

+1 that caliber is the shit

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

It'd seem to me that anyone asking this question would already have shot enough to know the answer.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

A gamer? What's that? Does that have anything to do with swinging? Only joking, I was too busy playing real soldiers in my youth, but I think my children are up to speed on the latest shoot'en ups.

I asked the question because its Shot Show time and its been a while since I last got there. I live in England, Great Britain, so knowing that its the States that have all the new toys I thought I would ask. The Gung Ho phrasing of the question was intentional and a bit of fun. Thankfully, contributors have given me some good answers and plenty to research. I've shot .50 and 338 when ammo was issued but that was a while ago and as I was the wrong rank they wouldn't give me one.. so I wind coached most of the time.

Once a year I am invited, because I am a good shot, to go up to Scotland at the end of the rutting season. Its the clear up week to take out the broken and weak Reds. All sorts of longs come out to get the job done as there isn't anything sporting about it. This year 300 WSM and 338 Lapua were used by a couple of the boys making my 308 look a little puny. Any other time a 308 is just fine. Weather can be howling and the range can get quite silly. Something big, bad and fast is needed to punch through in these conditions. A typical scenario would be a Red Stag, with a broken leg, out where he can't be stalked. He has probably been stalked a couple of times so won't let it be done again to him. However, with injuries he will not survive the winter and will starve. Fully fit he would have a hard enough time of it as it is.
So I was just playing with the idea of making up a new long. Just wanted to know what is hot and how far technology can reach. Just checking that I'm not missing something obvious. A bit of overkill, I'm sure that Stag wouldn't care.

Boys toys, don't we just love them.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Yes there are a ton of choices out there but you may want to look at $$$ and availability of components. I have a .338 Titan but I am going to switch it to a Lapua because the Lazzeroni brass is the worst in the world (in my opinion). I'm building a .408 which I know will be expensive to shoot but I will have the .338 for when the wallet get thin. From what I have read and heard from others the .375 CheyTac is the way to go.

+1 on this.
.300 RUM brass is readily available and cheap, $.90 compared to $2.50 per piece for .338LM.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

That 510 Allen Mag is unreal. People hunting some T.Rexes? As small as it is, I was still thinking I would make a 338 edge.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Lodi ,,,,,

Please tell me more about your Lazzeroni Titan rifle, the brass you have, when you purchased it, and how many rounds of it you currently have ,,,,

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

Anzio 20/50. 20mm necked down to .50 cal. 750 or 800 grain solid going 3200 to 3600 fps.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

First I have seen the Allen Magnums... 300gr 338 is ~super sonic at 3k yards... that's nuts, thanks for sharing.

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

To bad the 14.5×114mm isnt a available cartridge. A 1,026gr bullet at 3,300 ft/s with 24,520 ft·lbf and available ammo(in some places).

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

If you are wanting to stay in the 338 caliber then pretty much every other 338 will be faster than the lapua besides the 338 win mag and 338 federal. The 338 Edge is just a 300 ultra mag necked up to 338.
The 338 Ultra Mag is even a tad faster than the Lapua.
Now if you want to step it up a good notch go with the 338-378 weatherby.
Next you got the Kings of 338 and those are the wildcats 338 snipetac, 338 Allen Magnum..both of these are monsters based off the 408 cheytac case. Id go with the Allen magnum, he makes some awesome rifles and wildcatters

Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?

14.5mm should do the trick. Hell, out to 400-500m, the muzzle blast alone will kill, clean, & cook Bambi all in one shot.
If that wont do the trick, get yourself a 120mm smooth bore - the 5,000+fps sabot round. Or... step up to a real weapon, & get a Rail Gun.

Okay, wise ass mode off. How far we talking, I mean they're only deer. With slugs having BC's of 1+ in .338, I'm thinking you shouldn't have much trouble with wind, unless it's blowing hard enough to tip over vehicles.
