My little temperature alert USB thing-a-ma-bob woke me up at 4am this morning. Aparantly the AC unit in my server room decided to switch on to heat!!!!!. and started blowing out 120 degree hot air!!!!!. Hot servers + 120 degree hot air... yea... not a good combo. It was 122 in there before I came in to open up the place and cool it off. Nice huh?.. POS. Got AC guy comming out to take a look at it.

Anyways... figured Id share my little episode.

Re: Server room madness

How many servers in your server room?

We had 200+ here, and when the A/C dies things also die, mainly SCSI hard drives and controller cards..

Most new servers have thermal alerts and will sut down the server..

Been awoken more often than not when I had pager duty...

Re: Server room madness

Its a pretty small room... probably 15 or so with the associated APC's and switches. Im really suprised too that nothing was starting to shut down and or break.

Most of the equipment is fairly new... whew..

The AC guy came out and we removed the solinoid that was shorting. It was the solinoid for the heat!!!! So its an AC only unit now!

Re: Server room madness

I feel your pain, hopefully all your equipment will still be working in a month. We had a similar issue and caught it pretty quick bit didn't feel the effects until a month later.

Re: Server room madness

I feel your pain as well. We lost a 275 ton chiller on our server room (4000 boxes) last week and the backup didn't switch over automatically. Went from 65 to 100+ in 12 minutes. I lost three boxes and a filer head. Definitely could have been worse but it shows that even the good stuff can fail.

You guys are killing me! I wish man... but Saturday is going to be the best I can do for manatee! The boss usually calls for something even when I call in sick. I can just imagine talking with him while you guys are hammering away at the 500m steels in the background! I guess I could just tell him Im watching Full Metal Jacket or something.

65 to 100 in twelve minutes is crazy! Luckily I did purchase a small APC portable airconditioner. So I turned it on right away when I got there...... It took about 45 min to get to 122 in there this morning. But thats also with the AC unit blasting 120 degree heat.

Re: Server room madness

I swear it just works out that way Ren! Sometimes, when the economy hasn't been sabotaged by a socialist mob 2 years before an incomptetent, unqualified, sob...

Sorry. Where was I...

Anyway, weekend, and after hours work, is a necessity in my business when times are more robust, as I can work in the occupied spaces while the tenants are away, thus mid week openings present themselves for shooting, golf, satisfying the ladies, etc...

Re: Server room madness

Been down that road. The MDF at my old job was a closet which housed 4 fiber switches, 2 routers, 3 servers and the company PBX plus CSU/DSU's for the T1's. The room had no AC or ventilation.

The boss's fix, punch a hole in the ceiling and buy a space AC and vent into the ceiling. The AC unit died in 2 weeks.

Re: Server room madness

Does that mean Phantasm can shoot on Thursday?

That's why you should call A-Squared Door Services in sunny Tampa to come down there and modify your door by cutting in a sexy louvered vent, and installing it for an absurdly high price that is still worth it because my competition tends to charge even more, and can't add, subtract or read a tape measure

I know the owner and the only down side is the ladies get very distracted by his manliness

Nice. My new/current job has me sitting in a nice AC'd NOC playing Network Tech and monitoring a nationwide WAN. I see high temp alarms a lot. Which means I call the admin at 0200 and tell him his pretty new dell box is making breakfast without him. And no, unfortunately I can't go shooting on Thrusday.

Oh man.... You have no idea how many times I have seen that in my job. I am a data storage guy and it always amazes me to see a company that has just spent 100K on a small storage array and some fiver switches to rack them in an empty office with their other servers and simply leave the door open for their cooling solution.

Some will be "smart" and leave a note on the door to not close it, as the equipment will overheat.

Been to a few places to help bring things back online after someone on the night cleaning crew has closed the door after vacuuming....

Why is there even heat in a server A/C system?

Did you know that this thread was dead 2 and one half years ago? Just curious why you woke it from its death bed with "Why is there even heat in a server A/C system?"

i cant see it ever getting cold enough in florida for a server room needing heat.

but what do I know, I am a licensed Air Conditioning Contractor in Florida and as a Licensed Building Contractor I have built some server rooms.

I was being sarcastic! The irony of 50 degrees (Fahrenheit of course) being described as "bitter" was subtle I thought.
