Started out as a basic blued, synthetic stock XT-22 and then the fun started. Everything looked pretty good from the factory, clean lines, barrel centered in the channel and a 3.5lb trigger pull. Accuracy at 50yards hung a little over or under 1" with a variety of high speed and subsonic ammo.

First thing on the menu was chopping the barrel to 16 1/4" to make it as short as possible for carrying on a mountain bike. I cannot find a lathe on the Big Island and I was not going to pay $150 to ship it out to the mainland for a cut and crown. It was done with a hack saw, file and brass lap so I will spare you the photos to prevent anyone from having a heart attack. Next up was opening and reinforcing the barrel channel. From the factory it was free floated but the stock touched with minimal pressure. I opened the free float to 1/10" and using a bow scale we measured only 12-14lbs of pressure to make the stock flex to the barrel.

The lateral reinforcing ribs were dremeled out and 6 carbon fiber arrow shafts were epoxied into place.

With the forend properly reinforced I bedded the barrel lug in Devcon 10110 and taped off the barrel to maintain the 1/10" free float. After bedding the force required to flex the stock to the action was 82 fricken pounds!! The forend was rock solid and you cannot twist it in your hands. I really think this might offer new life in some of the old tupperware stocks I have laying around. If you check a local archery shop they will have bags of scrap carbon fiber tubing from cutting down custom arrows. I have a trash can full of 6-8" scraps that were a perfect fit.

Added some devcon on the wrist and forend plus an Anderson bolt knob from PTG. At $12.50 it is the best deal on the market and its a perfect fit for a .22 handle. I turned down the bolt knob with nothing more than a file, threaded it and then epoxied the knob on. When I am ready to cerekote I will throw some epoxy on the joint and sand it down for a invisible fit.

DNZ rings to hold a tasco/stoney point combo I had sitting around from an old project. The more I use the DNZ rings the more I like them, perfect alignment with no lapping.

The Trigger was super simple to work on, quick polish on the sear/trigger interface and spring tuning dropped the pull down to a crisp 16oz with absolute reliability and I was ready for another trip to the range.

I forgot the camera to document the range work but it went very well. I looks like it is a toss up between the Winchester 38gr subsonic and the CCI subsonic HP, both very consistent at .4-.5" for five shot groups at 50 yards. I was also playing with torque on the front barrel lug screw and saw no changes in accuracy or point of impact, possibly based on the barrel being supported about 3" in front of the lug. I took it to 30lb and left it alone. Playing the the rear action screw (front trigger guard screw) was a different story and I was able to push vertical point of impact about 2" with every 5 lb of pressure. The area is completely unsupported on the factory stock and it was clearly flexing the entire action. The laminate stocks are solid in this area and Im sure bedding would reduce the sensitivity in screw torque. It was showing a definite preference at about 15lbs, going heavier or lower was really causing groups to open up, It was very similiar to working up a handload and finding the sweet spot.

I only have a couple hundred rounds through it but it has quickly become my favorite plinker. The balance is perfect I could not be more pleased with the outcome. Please ignore the crappy krylon on the action. Everything rust so damn quick in Hawaii it drives me insane. I am moving back to the mainland soon and it will get blasted in AO and given a nice base of cerakote something before the kids tear into it with a sponge paint job.

Nice job man. Im kind of debating doing the same work on my savage accustock.

Dude I was ready to throw up as I did it but it actually came out better than I expected. I must have told myself "are you nuts" at least a dozen times but I really wanted that barrel shorter. No worries if it turned out to bad I would have it cleaned up when I hit the mainland. Considering its hovering around 1moa at 50yards I dont know how much better I could expect. Either way it is solidly bedded, 6" shorter and a better shooter than when it came out of the box so Im happy with it.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

A determined, thinking man with a rusty wrench and a pocketknife will accomplish more than a lazy, ignorant putz with a full machine shop.

Hacksaw on a barrel isn't scary. Having no plan for dealing with cleaning up the muzzle afterwards would be, but it sounds like you got 'er done.

I like what you did with the fore end on that stock. That is my plan for my 2 Savages. Unfortunately, I haven't had time and inclination to do anything about them at the same moment, but now that I know where to go for the carbon fiber shafts (thanks, man!) I think something may be happening on that front soon.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

This is the best image I can get. I just cleaned it up and hit it with more krylon since its getting shipped to the mainland and Hawaii can rust stuff overnight. The fine circle you can see around the crown is the first layer of krylon, when shot it left a nice pretty multi point star from the microgrooves and everything looked nice and even. It passed the qtip test before a single round was fired with no signs of any burs or rough metal. Just remember I am not saying the hacksaw was the first choice but rather a matter of availability. A friend sent me a stub of pipe that he squared off on a lathe and I hardened the face with a torch. I tapped the tube for screws to hold it in place against the barrel and make the cut. I left it in place and cleaned it up with a file then 320grit AO stones. The secondary bevel was made with an 82deg cutter and that was futher cleaned up with the brass lap and 600 grit lapping compound.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

That muzzle work looks clean. Nice job. Bedding job also real clean. Nice work.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

Grip is just textured Decvon 10110. Some use marine tex but it seems to lay down a bit more, I like the sharp spikes I get using a kitchen sponge. Dont bother with any devcon you can get in a tube at the hardware store or JB weld, both will lay down flat with no texture.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

awesome home-smithing--makes me wanna try my hand on something not so expensive! i actually have more fun with creations like yours than the expensive stuff that I have to be so careful with!
CHEERS!

Re: New toy is kicking azz

An awesome project...and even better resourcefulness!
I had no idea about the rusting down there at sea level. Where I live it is dry dry dry.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

I love it! If you don't mind I will be stealing your idea on the stock and possibly the barrel. It looks great thank you for posting this.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

Up and running my shop after the move to Montana and will have my lathe in next month but I dont think I will be touching the crown. Yesterday it was properly broken in on some local squirrels and the 38gr Winchester subsonic was tearing some big holes on the exits, very pleased with it. I did not put it on paper but anything under 100 yards had minimal chance of survival. Was hitting very well and chipping away at a gallon of milk sized rock at 280 yards was easier than expected.

Now I just need to strip it, blast it with AO and go nuts with the airbrush as soon as I finish painting a bedroom, laying hardwood floors, installing cabinets, new shower stall, registering vehicles blah blah blah.....

Re: New toy is kicking azz

Ok finally got around to putting it on paper and playing with some different ammo in prep for a smack the smiley match.

All groups at 50 yards from a bipod and sandbag. Had to shoot from the benches, the way the range is set up you cannot see the target boards if you go prone. I dont think I will mess with the crown a bit, I cannot imagine putting it on a lathe is going to change a damn thing.

Last group is at 100 using 2mils of holdover, dont know when the flier snuck in but that was pretty consistent for the ammo used. I fired multiple five shot groups and there was always one low flier, will bust out the chrono and see if it is deviation or just me. The fiocchi ammo shot very well, beating out anything I had from federal, winchester and even eley but I did not have any wolf on hand.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

Very interesting and cool read thusfar. I like it!

Edit: that last group in the above post at 100 yards looks pretty good too, better sans flier.

Re: New toy is kicking azz

i was waiting to see if it's actually a shooter or not and it appears to be. I'd like to see what it could do with some wolf match ammo. good job and a unique stick no doubt
