I am interested in finding out what you guys think of each of these and I want to see true velocity difference and barrel life numbers.
I want to build a rifle to take advantage of the 180/190 bullets
and I want this thing to carry the mail.. So tell me what you know..

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

These 7mm threads keep on poppin up, the 7 saum and 284 are somewhat similar, both use powder weights in the high 50's while a 7mag is going to be in the high 60's - low 70's. If you want to use 180's with a barrel under 30", go 7mag.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

So what are we looking at for speed vs length? on the 3 of these. This wont be my match rifle it will be for hunting. That being said I want to keep it on the light side if I can.

Check out this topic on 6mmBR.

6mmBR

I just finished a 7mm RSAUM build on a short action Big Horn, 28" Krieger #17 HV 1-9tw with KMW Sentinel stock. Still working on loads, but my best so far, shooting in the .2s and .3s, is a 180gr Berger Hybrid in front of 59.2 gr of VV N560 in fully prepped Remington 7mm RSAUM brass with 2.96 OAL feed from an Alpha type 3 mag. MV is 2913.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

A 7STW or 7RUM is going to provide peak performance. Maybe even Tom Sarvers new 7mm Hulk, based on his 300Hulk, which is a shortened and improved 338LM.

Here's how barrel life works: it goes to hell fast as you approach and pass 3000fps.

A 7mm-08 @ 2650-2700 will get many thousands of rounds
A 284 @ 2850ish will get several thousand
A 7RSAUM @ 3000fps will see ~2000+
A 7WSM @ 3000+fps will see 1500+ (less efficient than 7RSAUM)

And it gets worse from there...

Not sure what your basing the last statement from, I have right at 2500 rounds thru my 7RM with the 162 gr. Amax at 3,100 with no hint of accuracy going away.

Isn't that fantastic barrel life for a 7RM? I don't doubt you, but I gotta admit I can't understand how a 7WSM can eat a barrel in ~1500-2000 rounds @ 3050fps, meanwhile an even higher capacity cartridge lasts longer?

Is well over 2500 typical of 7RM? I know there's a lot of variables controlling barrel life, but in general, more powder = more velocity = less barrel life.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I have owned a couple of 7rem mags I just sold one last year that I should crotch kick myself for doing. I am going to hunt with this rifle only I have a 6.5x47 that i shoot matches with. so its hard to shoot 2500 rounds out of your hunting rifle. I would just like to see speed and accuracy. if I can get the 2500+ rounds out of any of them that would be a huge step up from my 6.5-06 AIs 1500 round life span.. I feel like I waisted a good barrel when I made that rifle now. I just want horse power with okay barrel life
and reasonable brass.

For ridiculous ballistics and a low round count hunting rifle, 7STW or Tom Sarvers 7 Hulk deserve attention. IIRC, Tom is getting 3500fps+ from the hulk with H1000 and a berger 180 hybrid. He is an expert shooter, but can't (or barely can) spot his own shots @ 1000 yards because the bullet gets there so fast. Something like 4.5 mrad to 1000.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

7mm hulk is an absolute animal! But it comes at the price of barrel life. The balance of speed, accuracy and durability is a fine balance to find. Usually you get two out of three and compromise on the last.

That's insane. I thought low 7's with a .260 was good.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them... sort of a pick yer poison sort of deal. FWIW If I were building a rifle off a long action and was limited to 7mm chamberings, I would be all over the 284 or a 7WSM

Agreed. Tom seems to think a melonited barrel oughtta get 1000 rounds or so. That works in some applications, but not mine.

After a lot of research, I felt that for ME, the 284 was the correct blend of performance and barrel life. Notoriously accurate, superb ballistics (not INSANE though), and very useable barrel life, about 3000 unmelonited.

If you made a graph of velocity vs barrel life, you'd see that things take a serious turn for the worse at about 2900fps. The 284 resides right there on the edge between moderate and magnum. I like that. Other's may decide they want a magnum. Still others might want a MAGNUM.

There's a problem with this statement or rather the question as you phrased it. There isn't a nickel's worth of difference in case capacity between the 7mm WSM and the 7mm Rem. Mag. Both are listed in several sources as having a capacity of approximately 82 - 83 grains of water.

If you loaded both cases with the same bullet to magazine length then the performance will be similar.

Regards.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

That is right- 7 wsm and 7rm are very close. I went 7 RM for the extra few grains and more importantly to me the wide availability of ammo and brass

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

Right... So again I ask, how does one get 2500+ rounds (double) out of the 7RM, compared to the 7WSM...?

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I think you will be happy with either the SAUM or the WSM if you are looking for speed. I went a little different and built a 7 SAUM AI. I am pushing 180's @ 3100 without pressure signs and it seems to be the flatest thing around.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I had a 7STW years ago with a 29 inch krieger. I was pushing 140 BST at 3600 FPS and burned the barrel in less than 700 rds. it was a fun 800 yds coyote rifle while it lasted.
I would go with the 284 win and shoot the heavies like the 180 berger, after talking to several F class shooters who have one, their barrel last about 3000 rds and still holds 1/2 min. According to them.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I can tell you this much, if you run a 7wsm at full power and even remotely long strings, your barrel isn't going to last long at all. If you get 1k rounds out of it, you would be doing well.
lasers for sure but the barrels run out quick. Make them up where you can get the barrel set back for a little longer life.

Moly and a quality tube.
Build one shoot it without torching it and report back.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

Shooting warmish loads, my 7rm was good for 1100 rounds when it began to go. 90% of my shooting was done in a match type setting, so lots of rounds in a short period of time. It is being rebarrelled to .284 now and hoping for much more life out of it.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

7mm WSM
28" barrel, 1 in 8.5" twist, melonited
Alpha mags
64.5gr H1000
Berger 180gr VLD hunting
2937fps

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

If you want to go short action go SAUM. My saum's had 24" barrels and ran about 2950 with 160 class bullets.

Re: .284,7SAUM OR 7mm Remmag??????

I have the 7mmRM and the 7SAUM...I will take the SAUM all day everyday over the 7mmRM...don't get me wrong standard 7mm is a great round but the SAUM case is much more efficient pushing the same if not greater velocities with far less powder and you can build it on a long or short action.

I run my 180grn bergers out of a 26 inch tube at 3014fps(slight pressure) and my 162 A-max 3018fps (not a hot load at all) with 60 grns of H4831sc.
