Hello,
I'd like to say I'm really glad to have joined this site. It seems like there's a lot of knowledgeable people here that are willing to help (which i need m a lot of). This is my first attempt at precision shooting. It's always something I've been interested in but finally went and bought a Remington 700 sps chambered in 308. Any feedback I could get on a base, rings or scope would be appreciated.

Re: New Guy Post....

I'm gonna save you some time finding a scope being I was just in the same boat as you... go Vortex. If money is tight I'd suggest a Viper HS 5-15x44. If you can swing it, then get a PST series. Goodluck and welcome to The Hide!

Re: New Guy Post....

Oh and for rings and base, I'd look into Seekins Precision. They seem to do the job well.

Re: New Guy Post....

Is there any difference in quality or durability between the PST and the viper? If so I really wouldn't mind spending the extra money to get something that'll last.

Re: New Guy Post....

I would say that at this stage in your shooting career, such questions are less important than being able to get what's needed to get you up and running, and I'd worry about the finer points a bit further down your own particular road.

Re: New Guy Post....

What would you suggest as good starting point optics wise?

Re: New Guy Post....

First off, welcome to the hide.

Second, its really personal preference on optics. There are a bunch of makers out there. If you want one that's rugged and has very clear glass, I would look into US Optics, S&B, Vortex, Zeiss, Nightforce ect ect ect. Those choices right there cover just about all price ranges.

You really can't go wrong with any of those makers. Hope this helps out.

Re: New Guy Post....

Vortex has the best warranty ever devised, it it breaks for whatever reason, they will fix it or replace it. I would give a budget, then the recommendations will follow.

Re: New Guy Post....

Well I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with a vortex pst with seekins rings and base. I couldn't justify putting something like a nightforce or s&b on my first rifle. Thanks for all the help!

Re: New Guy Post....

+1 to that.

I can tell you that we have seen a lot of the vortex PST's coming through on student rifles ever since they came out, and not one has ever brought a student down.

It might be the only way they sell them, but definitely get matching knob and reticle units of measure. Either MOA knobs & MOA reticle, or MIL knobs & MIL reticle. Not a combination.

Re: New Guy Post....

Don't forget about the SFWA SS 5-20x HD. Awesome scope, awesome warranty, and on sale now! The PST Vortex is back-ordered at a lot of places. I have the SS scope and have an order in for another...

That's the one I was looking at. What's FFP and SFP mean? Also on the reticle .... are the lines the same as a mil dot? Or is it something completely different?

Re: New Guy Post....

Good thread! That cleared a lot up. You'll have to bear with me I'm as new to forums as I am precision shooting so the abbreviations kinda throw me off. Thanks again for the help!
