Less than a month out of the box, the new Stag Super Varminter is coming alive.

I took a chance and tried a pair of Weaver See-Thru rings directly on the flattop instead of a riser, and it worked out just fine. For now, there's a Tasco 6-24x42 Mildot Varmint/Target scope mountd and it's adequate but marginal. It falls just short of clearly revealing 22 caliber holes at 250yd. That's not a hanging offense for ae $79 scope, but better is needed. I'm negotiating for a used Weaver T-24, and that should resolve any such issues.

My dealer also has a Model 6, and he put me onto Prvi-Partizan 69gr Match. At $11 and change per box of 20, expectations were low. Too low. It holds under 2MOA under match condituons for 40 scoring rounds at 250yd, in the hands of my 15 Y/O Granddaughter for her first time out with the gun (or any AR), and only her second match. I'd say that ammo passes my test just fine.

Very informal post match function testing using the Prvi brass in handloads showed the rifle performing at or very close to its 1/2MOA promise, in a rifle that already had over 300 pieces of assorted loads through it since its last (its first and only) cleaning.

The load is pretty much straight out of 1996 edition of the the Nosler reloading Guide. Prvi brass, flash holes reamed, CCI-400 standard primers. Nosler 50gr Ballistic Tip 2.235" OAL (shorter than max spec to ensure positive feeding) atop 26.5gr of W748. I loaded it all progressively on a Dillon RL550B, using the Dillon automatic powder measure with no charge weight checking after the initial setup. The standard RCBS F/L die is adjusted all the way down to the baseplate.

This was a deliberate effort to build these loads without any massively overt match prep. I wanted to see the load perform as made and employed under worst case scenario conditions. My only deference to match prep was reaming the flash holes. It works well and should only work better if more care is given to using match primers, weighing charges, and extending the OAL.

Stag Model 6 owners take heed. This is an outstanding rifle, and it responds well to even minimal extra care in the ammunition department. At 100yd, it shoots Fed American Eagle 100rd bulk packed 55gr like a varmint gun on handloads. I am developing mine as an FV250 T/R rifle for my Granddaughter to use at short and medium range competion, and am already mildly regretting seeing it in another's hands. I hope I can get over that. I may have to buy another one for myself. Oh dear....

I'm no AR expert by any means, but this is the best AR I've ever shot, bar none.

Re: Stag 6 Super Varminter report.

Thanks, for the info. I "just" got one, and mounted a 4-16 Monarch, cause I "had one". I feel a whole lot better, after reading your report. I haven't even shot mine, yet. I bought a thousand of the 69 gr. PMC, and was "worried" that they might not perform. Thanks for the post!
