Question for long time shooters

Recently I have decided to try to start shooting long range (beyond 500 yards). I wanted to get a Remington 700 sps however with 3 kids my budget didnt allow it. I ended up getting a Savage Axis in 308. Now after reading reviews on it I see that some shooters like it and others kinda look down on it. Any thoughts from shooter that have been doing it awhile?

Re: Question for long time shooters

the axis will shoot... the reason a lot of people don't like it, myself included, is that there are no aftermarket parts available, IE stocks, triggers, etc...

but have fun w/ it, if you'd have asked first, I'd have said to buy a Stevens 200, but that's looking forward to upgrading it. as it is now, have fun, but IF you decide to get dedicated, be ready to buy a new rifle. , when you outgrow the Axis

Screw what anyone else says.

Mount a decent scope on it, get some match ammo and shoot it.

YOUR fun and enjoyment is what it's about, not what anyone else says. </div></div>I couldn't agree more. I too have kids and I know how hard it is to want one thing and end up with something else. Shoot it and keep saving up, if you're not truly happy get what you really want in the long run. Peace.

Re: Question for long time shooters

my brother was shooting an Axis/Edge in .308. It shoots just fine. He has not done any accuracy testing, load development, etc...but he also does not care if can clip flies' wings. As long as he can hit the targets he is aiming at, the dude is thrilled and the rifle was doing that- no problem. For 300-400.00 (with scope), it was a great introduction for him.

Re: Question for long time shooters

Thanks for the replys guys. I have shot it and it seems to do really good so far. I havent got to shoot it past 100 yards yet but hopefully that will change soon. Eventually I want to get the Remington 700 or even a CZ550 but for now the Savage is good.

Savage is good? I think you'd be surprised how well a Savage with a custom barrel and stock will shoot against those more expensive customs. We've built two this year and haven't had to take a back seat to guns costing many times more at our 1000 yard matches. Just because you can work on them on your kitchen table and don't need a gunsmith don't feel you'll be undergunned at a long range match.

Some people like chevys some people like fords.

Re: Question for long time shooters

Rifle Basix makes triggers for the Axis - easily installed and a huge improvement. My two sons' in .270 shoot well under 1 MOA with several loads, and one has produced a number of sub 0.5 MOA groups (3 rounds at 100 yards - this is a hunting rifle).

Re: Question for long time shooters

Savage have come a long way from their old days. If it is accurate and you enjoy it then who cares... I have had lower end model guns that shoot better the others and have had high end guns shoot like garbage brand new. It is just luck of the draw if you get a really bad gun. Keep what you like.

Re: Question for long time shooters

The heck with everyone else. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Savage Axis rifles. I started off just like you. I then upgraded the glass then saved my money and upgraded the rifle. Everybody has to start somewhere. Welcome to the Hide Family btw.

Re: Question for long time shooters

I think that the axis is a great rifle for starting out. My advise to you is sight it in and get off the bench. Practice prone, kneeling, sitting and standing. Deer and people alike are much more afraid of people who can shoot a baseball card at 100 kneeling than a dime sitting on a bench. Before I got my high dollar guns I beat all my friends with my off the shelf model 7 as long as we were standing, sitting or kneeling. It was always fun to watch the blood run out of thier face.

+1 install this trigger and it will shoot as good as you can shoot. It's not a custom, but .05 groups aren't bad.

Good luck and have fun,

Re: Question for long time shooters

Again I want to thank everyone for their thoughts on the subject. I am also on another shooting fourm and since im a new shooter no one would give me any advice. I am happy with the Savage Axis and with how it shoots so far. If any of you guys come to Vegas the beer is on me.

Re: Question for long time shooters

Oh good grief. I just read your original post. Just go shoot and have FUN!!!

Re: Question for long time shooters

I guess I should have asked the question a little better. Why does the Savage Axis have a bad reputation? Personally I like the rifle I was just wondering why some shooters dislike it.

Re: Question for long time shooters

I don't know what you're planning to use it for but the new savage 11LWH is supposed to be one of the most accurate and lightest rifles out of the box (especially in 6.5 Creedmore).

Re: Question for long time shooters

The knock on the Axis is the non-adjustable trigger and synthetic stock (just like all the others). but I never heard anyone knock the accuracy!

As already mentioned, if it works for you..................
