Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

I have a 300 wby built on a mk 5 action. The gun shots great now but shot horrible out of the box. My 2 cents is to stick with Remington actions. I have built on a bunch of actions but Remington are by far the easiest and custom parts are readily available. I kick myself every day for trading my Remington 700 300 wby for the mk 5.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

I don't care for avalability. Just want s good foundation and something I can shoot untill I have the money to build one.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

Remington 700 all day long. Pm me if you have any specific concerned about the wby because I have owned several and been down that road.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

I own a Vanguard, a 700, and a Savage and I honestly think the Vanguard is the nicest out of the box. If you plan on building it up in the future, a Remington or Savage is a better option, but if you plan on keeping it stock, I wouldn't hesitate on the Vanguard.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

If you want the benefits of a push feed in a Mauser action the Howa Vanguard is the ticket.

Looks like Series 2 is a Sub-MOA with a little better stock. I'm taking a Howa custom 308 to Badlands this year. Be sure and price the Howa barreled actions with Timney and Manners or Bell Carlson stock.

My personal experiences have been that weatherby rifles are over hyped and over priced. I have had 3 and none of them every shot good and the barrels were all pencil thin.

I'd agree on the Mark V. Last fall I helped a buddy sight in a new $400 30-06 Vanguard with $200 Redfield. It was in a good bench mount. He made a neat .5" triangle at 100 yds.

Pretty sure he's looking for an economical base for a custom long range hunting rifle. Mark Gordon(Short Action Customs), Robert Snyder Gunsmithing and Michael Ware(Controlled Caos) are all resident Howa/Vanguard afficionados. Pick their ears.

The flat bottom and integral recoil lug are far superior to round actions handling recoil and torque of heavy hunting bullets. Consider a Howa 308 heavy barreled action punched out to 300wsm. It's a good hammer forged barrel.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

The Weatherby Vanguard is a great action. Do yourself a favor though and get the Howa 1500. It's the same action minus the bolt shroud, the stamp on the side and the $100 difference in price. Anything with Weatherby's name or logo stamped on it seems to justify a price increase in value for what you actually buy. Also before anyone says anything about me favoring one over the other, just know I own a Mark V custom 300 wm and a Vanguard TRR 308 and I also own the Howa Varmint 308, and after my experiences with them, the Howa was more accurate out of the box and continues to be, and cost me $170 less than the TRR Vanguard with an after-market B&C stock. Just my $0.02

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

Yep Vanguard actions are made in the Howa plant. If you want the Vangaurd, buy a Howa.

Re: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

They're good rifles and a solid choice for a build. The 700 has the advantage over the competition when it comes to availability of actions, parts, accessories, etc but if you get a good deal on a Howa/Vanguard I'd go with it.
